Lynchburg area internet

OK, my wife and I have reached the point where we are wanting to kill our home phone and go to just cell phones. Problem: we have Verizon DSL and you have to keep a verizon land line to keep the DSL. What other High Speed options are out there in the Lynchburg / Forest area?

I know the city uses Comcast. They suck, but you don't need a land line. If you're in Forest, I think Jet Broadband is the provider there.

Whatever you do, don't go with Shentel/Jet Broadband (JB was just bought out by Shentel). Nightmare.

As far as I know that Wimax signal still is not up in this area. So if you don't have Comcast/Jetbroadband available you have 2 options:

DSL or a data card from your wireless provider.

Until we get something better than the available 3G coverage in this area, I think those speeds would get very tired very quickly. Especially if you watch movies and stuff online.

Verizon was forced to provide a naked DSL option (DSL w/o phone line) for 2 years I think back in 05 or 06. So I know that's expired but I figured they would have kept it. Have you checked into that or have you just assumed? If they do force you to have a phone line I think a super stripped down version of verizon phone (no caller ID/voice mail/long distance) for like $5 per month. And if you have a dish (which you would if you don't have cable access), I think they charge you an extra $5 per month if you don't have a land line anyway.

Shentel/Jet is not that bad. Some people have big problems with their customer service, but I've never actually experienced anything bad with them. Although we do tend to lose connection after big storms, but I don't know how widespread that is.

We dropped our phone line and kept the Verizon DSL with no problem. A friend in the Goode area, however, tried to do the same thing and they told him he couldn't. It had something to do with his relative location to a main trunk line or something. If you haven't asked verizon yet, try it.

Push them hard. Seriously. I live in Lynchburg and have "naked" DSL from Verizon.

In Lynchburg: Comcast
In Forest: Jet/Shentel

The end.

JB/Shentel is HORRIBLE. DO NOT USE THEM. We are on our 5th modem because they don't like to fix problems, so they just always say we need a new modem. At my old house they always blamed our wireless router so they didn't have to come out and look at stuff. I'd say about every 3 months our internet is down about a week. We've been high up in management complaining and pushing for whatever they'll give us, but they have a monopoly where we live and its either that or satellite internet which really sucks. Verizon won't do DSL there, we have barely any cell signal, so we're screwed on the internet. I'd go with verizon DSL in a heartbeat if it was an option.

What is this Shentel business? Did they merge or something?

Shentel is Shenandoah Telecom, some NOVA company, and they bought out Jet. So Jet Broadband is no longer.

I have Comcast and I have yet to have a problem with them. In fact, I just called and renegotiated my price with them ala HMO. :D
