Stumbled across this interesting article on apps between the major platforms such as iPhone, BlackBerry & Android:

Mobile app analytics research firm (yes, one exists) Disitmo has released some interesting statistics about the pricing structure for all major app platforms. Among the findings is the fact that more than half of Android's apps are free.

57% of all apps on the Android Market, according to Distimo. That's nearly double the level of any other app store. Palm's ratio of free apps ranked second at 32%. As for the iPhone? One in four of its apps are free. And the platform with the least free offering is Nokia's Ovi, with 85% of its apps costing money.
Here's another interesting little chart from the article:

Obviously there are reasons for the above data. But it is interesting nonetheless considering the fact that most of us only pay attention to what our phones use.

That's interesting. I have only ever paid for one app out of the tons that I've had over the year. And it was expensive but only because it allows me to circumvent Verizon charging me even more money.

So far I've only used free apps. Mostly because I'm cheap and have a difficult time spending money on anything other than food, but also because I haven't yet found a function that I need enough to pay for.

Also, this title is misleading. Android does not have the "most free apps". Of available apps, they have the highest percentage of free ones. That could be a pretty big difference, especially since BB and iphone has been around so much longer to accumulate available apps. I'd also question how you even count what is available. Apple I think only allows their approved apps with what is sold through the app store (not sure if that's correct, but I'm assuming) so that would be easy to count. RIM does have appworld, but that's a tiny fraction of what's out there. How could you count every BB app when any shmoe can make one and post it on his site?
