I started out as Edu major at LU but switched. I have looked at getting into the education field. There now alternative routes out there that offer a simplier way to getting certified as a teacher. However, it seems that right now a lot of school systems are struggling financially. Just wanted to hear from some of you in the education field and get your thoughts? Maybe this isn't the best year to consider switching.

It depends if you are in a growing area like California, Texas or Florida. These states are desperately seeking tecahers and will bend their rules however necessary to meet the demand. In the rust belt, you often have to wait until a teacher retires or dies for an opening.

I'm finishing my MAT right now through DLP (after getting a business undergrad). This area is pretty depressed, and has been for a long time, but teaching jobs are there; in fact, most of the people who live around here now are involved in either education or medicine (unless they've got a slave-wage retail job). When I was in Georgia, they were begging for people to take the alternate licensure thing so they could teach.

Teaching jobs are out there if you know where to look, and if you're willing to coach or help coach something that isn't football and basketball. In fact, I sometimes think that if you want to teach high school history, you'd better be willing to coach or you won't get the job.

I'll elaborate more later. For now, I am off to get disrespected by 8th graders for 7 hours while doing mounds of paper work and answering emails and phone calls from angry parents who make a sport of belittling teachers due to their career choice.
