For those of you on here with kids, I was wondering if you bring them up believing in Santa Clause or not.

Edit: added a poll.

We're dancing that dance with our 5-year-old right now. I'm pretty much breaking it to her that Santa isn't real, because we don't really want her to believe that, but we also don't want her to be the kid all the other kids hate because she destroyed Santa for them. It's tough because TV and movies really confuse the issue of what's "real" and what's not, and then there's the concept of what's real as in cartoon vs. real people. Because that Santa in the mall or on the movie is a real person, but Santa's not real.

I refuse to lie to my kids but my wife insists on the "Santa experience" for them. To avoid marital strife I simply refuse to talk about the topic. My 7-year-old already figured things out on his own much to my wife's dismay.

My kids believe in santa and they get presents from santa. I don't really care one way or the other, but I really don't see the big deal like a lot of folks. I'll keep that going as long as possible. She did just figure out that Sparky is a guy in a costume though.

This is how it will be when I have kids.....also, this is how it was when I was growing up.

Although, it did ruin Christmas for me last year when I found out the real deal about Santa. I was pretty much like this guy:

my 4 yr old has already questioned the logistical impossibility of santa's new years eve task and therefore concluded that he isn't real.

i personally could care less....they like watching stuff about santa and we let them. all the gifts i get them are from santa though...

That's the thing. I don't have a problem with the "santa experience," but I don't want to lie to them. I'm torn though because I believed in Santa when I was a kid and I can't say it really affected me one way or the other.

it won't, you're kids will still trust you, you aren't turning them gay or anti-authority. i tell fibs to my daughter all the time. "back when i was a cowboy" stuff like that. the 2 yr old loves it and probably thinks its real but the 4 yr old looks at me funny and goes "you're teasing" and we have a good time.

Here's two things:

#1) If your kids can't trust you about a fat guy who rides on a sleigh and lives in the North Pole, why should they trust you about Jesus?

#2) I bought the presents for my kid (not literally, b/c I don't have kids). You better believe I want credit for it. I don't want some kids thanking "Santa". That's my gift!

to #1, kids are not as stupid as you think. They can tell the difference between something you do for fun once a year and something you, in theory, live your life dedicated to.

What's he do on New Year's Eve? Maybe I didn't get the full Santa story when I was a kid. :?:
