Climategate Defense Spin Fails



If you’ve been following significant parts of the blogosphere
for the last few days, you would have heard by now about “Climategate,” the leaked emails from the Climatic Research
Unit of the University of East Anglia, one of the leading bodies supporting man-made global warming.

The emails (Examiner.com has a decent summary of them here) show people connected to the University (and in the broader field) discussing ways to overcome climate change skeptics, including the way data is presented.

No matter which side of the fence you sit on when it comes to the idea of man-made climate change, the contents of the emails should be disturbing. But what perhaps is more disturbing is the defense put up in response to the leaked emails, because as spin goes it completely fails.

The general line, repeated across the mainstream media (often without challenge) and by those involved is that “the e-mails have been taken out of context and merely reflect an honest exchange of ideas” or as Michael Mann claims, skeptics are “taking these words totally out of context to make something trivial appear nefarious.”

The main focus of the defense has been on the interpretation of an email from Professor Phil Jones where he claims of using a ‘“trick” to “hide the decline” in global temperatures. The defense argues that the term “trick” is not suggestive of anything untoward, but is a scientific related term that is standard practice in cleaning up data.

And perhaps just as interesting is the NY Times and their decision to not reveal details of the emails to protect privacy. Uh, that's interesting position for an institution that fought all the way to the Supreme Court for the media to have right to release this type of material.

I believe these emails were leaked by some hackers that got a hold of them. The only reason I believe they're real is because they don't deny them. Some of what they're saying just seem so made up.

Senator Jim Inhofe has been fighting this for years. This is not going to go away. The media may try to avoid it, but the media is no longer 3 newspapers, 3 national networks and a cable channel.

Yes, but those are the ones to sway mass public opinion. Glenn Beck can get a hold of this story and give it some traction and maybe something minor will get done as a result, but it's not like we're going to see the Al Gore's of this world tarred-and-feathered.

This will only embolden the people who know Climate Change to be a fraud. It will not sway the opinion of the ignorant or the willful deceivers.

Public opinion has already been against AGW for a long while now, it's the decision-makers who need to be convinced. Power is in the hands of a small minority, and they feel content to ignore stuff like this because they really have no accountability.

This thing seems like it might be picking up a little steam...

I try not to come across as "anti-science" because it's a stereotype of Christians. And I guess in theory, I am pro science. It's very core principals yield amazing results. But this whole fiasco is exactly what is wrong with modern day science, not in theory but in practice. It's a human institution. And it's driven by money. How can you possibly trust the results when knowledge and truth are not it's true motivation?

Women are ultra-impressionable beings, and therefore are easily controlled by aliens and the elite. The main purpose of women on Earth (that is, what aliens have programmed them to do) is to enslave men via relationships. Women are obsessed with relationships and love (due to alien programming), and don't care about anything else in life. They would have men believe that being in a relationship is one of the most important things in existence, not realizing that men couldn't care less about being in a relationship--and rightly so. Furthermore, women force men to waste their precious time and resources on them. This demonic charade (i.e., relationships) has gone on for far too long and obviously has no end in sight. Make no mistake: It is indeed tragic that a man cannot satisfy his sexual needs without also getting trapped in a relationship at the same time (otherwise, he will be accused of rape, since non-relationship consensual sex does not exist on Earth, due to the aforementioned programming of women). Demonic enslavement traps such as this are the standard modus operandi of the Reptilians and Darkness. Now, just imagine if you had to buy an entire pizza restaurant just to order a pizza--an evil absurdity indeed.

Another thing that makes women insufferable is the fact that they are, essentially, babies. That is, they possess the emotional maturity of a 4-year-old boy. Women cry, throw fits, and need men to take care of them. Um, adults shouldn't need someone else to take care of them.

All in all, women promote the enslavement, rather than the liberation, of humanity. It's bad enough that aliens and the elite already control us. Now, throw women into the equation and you have absolute misery. They are like sheep dogs helping out a shepherd (hence the term "b****," in case you didn't know).

And to think, women are actually proud of their controlling ways. What a disgrace.

My understanding is that the emails were confirmed as legit when a New York Times reporter saw his own correspondence with the scientists in question among the emails leaked. He was able to confirm those were completely accurate and I think that, combined with no comment from those in question has given this enough legitimacy to roll forward fast.

I'm not sure if I see it as spoiling all of modern day science. There's a TON of great scientific work being done out there. However, I do think this is going to be a major setback to the modern scientific community and I'm interested to see how they respond. They have done a terrible job in general of communicating and working with the public at large. If they try to brush it aside or fail to acknowledge what a big deal this is, then I think I may be more prone to agree with you completely.

I've read that The U.N. says there's no reason to question climate change because of these emails.

So we can all relax now.

Other than ignoring these emails, they're only defense that they've given is that scientists use some kind of secret language that we're too simple to understand. "trick" doesn't mean they're trying to trick us. They use it in a way to mean "shortcut". NOOO WAAY. I'M SO UNSCIENCE I DONT BELIEVE IT. YOU MUST HAVE TO GET YOUR PHD BEFORE THEY LET YOU IN ON THAT CRAZY NERD SLANG.

you get that alot....whenever someone comes up with a flaw in their science, many scientists claims that its too difficult to explain why there is no flaw.
