A DEADLY plague could sweep across Europe, doctors fear, after an outbreak of a virus in Ukraine plunged the country and its neighbours into a state of panic.


A cocktail of three flu viruses are reported to have mutated into a single pneumonic plague, which it is believed may be far more dangerous than swine flu. The death toll has reached 189 and more than 1 million people have been infected, most of them in the nine regions of Western Ukraine.

President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko has called in the World Health Organisation and a team of nine specialists are carrying out tests in Kiev and Lviv to identify the virus. Samples have been sent to London for analysis.

President Yushchenko said: “People are dying. The epidemic is killing doctors. This is absolutely inconceivable in the 21st Century.”

My computer has a calculator on it and I calculated that .000189% of people who have contracted this virus have died. I guess I don't know the percentage of more common viruses but on the surface, that seems pretty tame.

So, their president actually believes that because this is the 21st century, people aren't supposed to ever get sick and die?

And as far as doctors (and other medical providers) are concerned, they have always been the people at greatest risk by the very nature of what they do.

you needed a caluculater to figure that out? just put a 1 in front of the decimal.

I dont know how long its been going on, but if its been with the month or so that this thing has happened, I think any president would be worried about it. Now if its been several months and thats it, then its not that big of a deal like some are saying

CONSPIRACY ALERT!!!

Meet Viktor Yushchenko. Back in '04, he was elected to office as part of the "Orange Revolution" on the strength of a populist campaigning style and public sympathy after he was disfigured and nearly killed when, it appeared at the time, that his political enemies tried to poison him. The poison claim was not readily verifiable and several non-official commissions have later ruled alternatively that it was a hoax and that it was real. Since taking office, his popularity has dwindled from over 50% to now less than 10%. He has dissolved the Ukrainian parliament twice and had to fire a good many of his political allies from their posts due to corruption charges. And, oh by the way, he's currently running for re-election so a good plague hysteria would be right in this guy's wheelhouse about now.
