A Sea Of Red

Need some advice. I live in a neighborhood where it's not uncommon for a dog to be wandering around. Sometimes a few dogs. Every couple of nights at about 12 or 1 am there are 2 dogs that get up on my deck and eat my cat's food. It's pretty annoying as I don't want to be paying to feed the neighborhood dogs. They're pretty cowardly and run away when they see me. Last night I was able to get pretty close to them before they noticed me. I was pretty sneaky. They were so caught by surprise they basically tumbled down the stairs when they ran away. One of them ran into a fence post. That made me feel kind of good. Anyway, I'm fairly certain I can trap them if I need to. What should I do to them? I don't know who's dogs they are because I never see them during the day. I obviously don't want to really hurt or maim them. Is it mean if I spray paint stripes on them or something? I could get a sharpie and write a mean note to the owners on their fur but that sounds hard.

I thought that was for cats. But I don't want to poison them. Unless the poison is nonfatal and it causes them to throw up approximately 5 hours later in their owners living room. And by living room I most likely mean trailor kitchen/bedroom.

Don't leave the cat's food out at night or put her bowl up higher so the dogs can't reach it.

If you only knew. He had a fence, and went to great lengths to get and put up a fence, to keep in his own dogs. you guys are silly....can't even build a dang fence...

It was a high quality fence! It's like trying to line my yard with giant sails with a consistent wind. It was an impossible task.

how far down did your post holes go?

3 feet w/ concrete. It initially didn't have a full 3 feet of concrete but the wind would shift the poles diagonally. So I tried out one side with more cement and the posts didn't shift unless there were nasty winds out. However the fence panels themselves would eventually separate. It was a no win situation unless I went to like chain link or something.

Two weeks ago I had to get rid of my dog, and was about to just let him out of the car up on Liberty Mountain, but instead took him to a girl. My bet says that other people have had that idea and gone through with it, and those dogs have found your back yard. If its a recurrent problem I would say these are strays since I cant think of any sane person letting their dog run around the neighborhood at night every night.

Can't you just replace the slats with gaps for the wind to pass through? Sure, it wouldn't give you complete privacy but it would likely solve the problem.

As for the dogs, I suggest a BB gun. No permanent damage but they'll know you mean business.

Seriously, 2 things I have found to work


Try a blend of cayenne and black pepper. Mix the two peppers together and sprinkle them around the perimeter of your yard. You can also mix flour in with the pepper if you want. The flour does not have a repellent effect but it helps you to see where you have sprinkled the pepper. The pepper causes the dogs to sneeze and most dogs won't cross over it to get to the other side. Be sure to reapply after it rains.


Soak cotton balls in ammonia, vinegar or rubbing alcohol and place them along the perimeter of your yard. All of these household items have strong smells that naturally repel dogs. Do not pour them directly on the ground though because they can be harmful to plants.


Or you could always hire someone who gets rid of dogs... I hear this guy is good and usually isnt doing much on the weekends....

PS: why do you make your cat eat outside anyway? The baby that lives here shares food with the dog, so its more convienient to leave it next to the kitchen table.

On a side note, do not try mixing milk with dry dog food- it starts to stink after a couple days and the ant situation can quickly get out of hand.
