If you decide to run a marathon, do me a favor

Please prepare yourself for the race. Look, I'm glad running is cool again (the 70's being the first time), but this is happening too much today with weekend warriors trying to do stuff they aren't ready for.
Three die in Detroit marathon
A man in his 60s fell and hit his head, Roach said. The cause of the fall was unknown. The man was transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Two other men, ages 36 and 26, also collapsed during the race and were pronounced dead at the hospital, Roach said.

I guess I won't be doing you any favors anytime soon. That's pretty crazy that the one guy was 26. It makes me feel old to know that I'm beyond an age that can die from running.

Makes you wonder if there should be/exists an applicaiton process.
I know the ridiculously long races(Badwater) have one. Maybe it's necessary to retool that, but it all depends on the circumstances surrondung this issue.

I'll do my best to avoid a nasty Great Bridge-Hickory fight on this forum, just to keep it civil around here.

Supposedly 5-10 people die each year in the US running marathons. Even thought it is becoming more popular, the death toll doesn't seem to be rising, at least in the last couple years. According to a Dr. I heard on the news, many of these people that die are actually healthy individuals who are in good enough shape. When you put your body through the rigors of a marathon, cardiac arrest can really happen to anyone. A lot of deaths come during the last mile of the race.
