SoI was a little late on the U2 thread,
But this Saturday Metallica is coming to the JPJ. It looks like Mrs Purple will be going since she promised YEARS ago she would go if I took her to a Michael W Smith concert (i have taken her to TWO)
It looks like they will be playing alot of pre BLACK ALBUM stuff which is good (If only U2 would have played more pre POP songs) and about 4 or 5 from the new one. Nothing from St Anger or Re Load. (Saw one song from Load but not in all of them)
I will be right up front. The only thing I don't like is tha I have to sit thru Lamb Of God....but oh well

Ok so I am a week late. But at my age, my ears are still ringing and my neck just stopped hurting!!
This was probably the 2nd or 3rd best (out of 7) Metallica concert I have been too. The group is so "fan friendly" you really do feel appreciated. Mrs Purple grudgingly went and even had a good time!!
We got in with Metclub fan tickets and were about 10' feet from the stage! I got some good pics but a very large bald man told me that I could not video....I listened!! I was a little put off early on b/c I was just waved through by security. I mean do Mrs Purple and I look so unlike a typical Metallica fan??!?!? For the record it is sad about the missing young girl and no I did not see her.
I liked the fact that they had two opening bands. Particularly, beacuse neither my wife or I cared for one of them. The first band was Gojira. We LOVED the bass player. Lots of energy but did have a sort of Neo Nazi look to him. The beat was good, and the mic didn't work very well for the lead singer which everyone thought was just as well, b/c we all liked jamming to the music. I even downloaded a few tunes from iTunes. As for Lamb of God, Mrs Purple put it best, "The beat is good, but who is the lead singer mad at?" Also, the bass player looked like Santa Clauses' evil twin brother. Also, if you are about 5'5" and around 150 and you run into me once, that is ok. If you run into me twice, I am probably going to look at you. If you do it a third time, you will get a contemptuous stare. And if you are trying to get in your mosh pit, and you run into me a FOURTH time, you should expect a fore arm shiver, that may or may not have knocked that guy out!!
Metallica was awesome!!! They looked like they really enjoyed being there, although we don't think that Kirk was really that interactive. The crowd was into it. For their final encore, Lars brought a kid of about 8 up on stage to help out with the cymbal crashes. The dad was jealous.
Here is a copy of the set list. The only song I wish they would have played was "For Whom The Bell Tolls" but such is life. At least they didn't play anything from St Anger!!

That Was Just Your Life
The End Of The Line
Creeping Death
Fuel
Fade To Black
Broken, Beat And Scarred
Cyanide Play
Sad But True
One
My Apocalypse
The Day That Never Comes
Master Of Puppets
Blackened (Great Place for FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS)
Nothing Else Matters
Enter Sandman
Encore:
Stone Cold Crazy (Queen cover) (They played THE WAIT in the past, AWESOME)
Trapped Under Ice
Seek & Destroy

If youve been following the story of the missing college student I think this is the concert in question (I think Metallica issued a statement)

RUBBER, That was probably the St Anger tour. While I enjoyed some of the songs on that album, I will say that it was the worst of the 7 Metallica concerts I had been to. I think they were still getting over alot of the baggage leading up to it. I would say give them another chance. LIke I said this concert was one of the best of theirs I have been to. (The first was probably the best b/c it was with Ozzy and it WAS the first one I went too. The second was when I was in Seminary and went with the person formerly known as my fiance'. LOTS of stories. But I think this might beat that one)
As for BATTERY, I agree, great song. Maybe replace Trapped Under Ice? Still For Whom The Bell Tolls is a classic. Sort of like U2 not playing PRIDE....oh wait....
Yes this is the concert with the missing girl. Very unfortunate. I did see where the band ponied up 50k for the reward money.
