Since Virgil Goode is not seeking re-election for Virginia's 5th District, I'm going to take my shot at it. Granted, a snowball has a greater chance of making it through the bad place than I do of winning, but why not?

Obviously you all know where I stand on some issues, but to clarify:
For fiscal responsibility and balanced budgets (Priority #1-if this isn't taken care of, then the rest won't matter b/c our country will be non-existant or a puppet state to those we owe money to)
Against business bailouts and government takeover of corporations
Against universal healthcare
Pro non-governmental recognition of marriages (its a religous thing...for legality purposes, all couples-heterosexuals and homosexuals-should be recognized as unions, with equal rights)

Unfortunately, I do not live in your district. If I did, you would have my vote. If you are serious, and I can help in anyway from here in Florida, let me know.

I think you'll find that it costs money. Ed, I know you're reading this. How is your campaign going?

If you are serious about this, I would quickly read through all 5,000 + posts you have made on this board and make sure nothing you have said has even the possibility of being taken the wrong way by even the most extreme nut-jobs. Use the delete option where needed.

That said, good luck!

Yeah, thats going to be a bear to deal with, probably will need to delete at least half my posts, lol. But we shall see...like I said, I know the chances of me winning are extremely, extremely, extremely small, but might as well give it a shot.

I'm sure "might as well run" won't get elected. Do you have any idea of how to go about running for office? I wouldn't vote for you by the way. I can see what electing someone who hasn't really accomplished anything is doing the the country right now. And that should be of no offense to you. You're young and fresh out of college. You haven't had a chance to yet.

I truly plan to run one day. However LUconn's right. I have another 10 years in business and working for an organization before it's a legit thought. Not to mention 10 years of volunteering and being heavily involved in local civic groups. Congress they say needs a bare minimum of 500k to have a shot. Not to mention I believe you have to get thousands of signatures of residents as well as those already in office. If you want to run as a 3rd party you need quite a few more signatures.

Think it through...it's not a bad goal to have however put yourself in the best position to succeed and not waste your time.

First and foremost I'm going to need to start getting signatures on a petition to get my name on a ballot, and personally it doesn't matter who you vote for, I just want to learn some things. However, to say I haven't accomplished anything just b/c I'm out of college is a little naive on your part. During the past 6 years, I've earned a bachelor's degree, an MBA, got certified as an EMT (perfect 4.0 at CVCC...and got a 3.75 in the MBA program at LU that same semester) plus additional ITLS training and certification, and started running with a rescue squad, and have worked a multitude of jobs. 2nd semester my freshman year I took 18 credit hours, worked two jobs, and kept my GPA above a 3.0.

Also during undergrad, I covered two huge events for the Liberty Champion: the Virginia Tech tragedy and the death of Jerry Falwell. I interviewed grieving students, grieving family members, and barring something horrible like Alzheimer's disease I'll never forget what that was like. I also took missions trips during spring break, to places like Boston and Rhode Island, Phoenix Ariz., and Horry County, SC. I've seen, firsthand, the living conditions of a wide variety of people.

Upon completion of my bachelor's, I did write a couple articles for Lynchburg Living magazine.

During my graduate years, not only did I earn a GPA above 3.5, I also worked fulltime living on a GA stipend for a job that required me to put in well over 40+ hours a week plus tons of travel during the fall and spring. This meant there were times when I didn't get into bed until 2 or 3 because of homework and had to wake up at 6 in order to get to a match.

Now have I worked a full-time job yet with a salary? No...but I'm getting ready to start. Yes, I do lack some experience, but I daresay that I have seen more and accomplished more than most 23 year-olds. And maybe inexperience is something this country could use...not Obama's type of inexperience, but someone who has yet to be tainted by the corruption that goes on in politics, business, media, etc...

However, while I have been thinking about it, I'm probably not going to be able to. Moving to Roanoke for a job means I'll be living outside the 5th District, and while I'm not 100% positive on this but I'm pretty sure you can't represent somewhere you don't live, and even if you could I wouldn't want to.

North Carolina doesn't have the greatest public school system, but yeah I'm pretty sure you have to be at least 25.

But he should be fine unless he turned 23 within the past five months. Election isn't until 2010. He won't hypothetically take office until January 2011.

Okay so why would that make you a qualified candidate for a government position? That's great you did good in school, covered events, and wrote for some little magazine, but that doesn't mean you've accomplished anything that will make you qualified to run for congres...

I'll turn 25 in 2010. But like I said, it doesn't really matter since I'm getting ready to move out of the district.

Actually no, I was looking in some places close to Roanoke in Bedford County that would be within the district. After visiting them, its evident I can get more for my money in Roanoke. That is if I do move there, I'm not going to enter into a lease or buy a house shortly after starting the job and then realise I absolutely hate it.

So your campaign for congress was derailed by rent being cheaper in Roanoke. Well hey, if you're not too busy in 2 years you could always try out for governor or something.

It's not as cut-and-dried as you think (or is it cut-and-dry?). The Constitution states that you only have to be an "inhabitant" of the state that you are representing.

Of course, that hasn't stopped some Congressmen. Check out Pete Stark, the #2 Democrat on the powerful House Ways & Means committee. His primary residence is in Maryland. However, he represents California in Congress... Why? Well, his wife's parents live in California, and that's where he is registered to vote.

(And for the record, his wife's parents are practically his age. Maybe younger. Stark is in his 70s, his wife is in her 40s).
