stores set to open this fall
Microsoft first announced its plan to enter the retail arena in February, when it hired David Porter, a Wal-Mart veteran.

Speaking at the Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans on Wednesday, Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner told people to "stay tuned" for more news on the retail front.

"And stay tuned, because we're going to have some retail stores opened up that are opened up right next door to Apple stores this fall," he said. "Stay tuned, just stay tuned."

Whoever's now in charge of Microsoft must get ticked off really easily. They say they're going after Google, and now it's Apple. These guys must have gotten a second wind or something.

microsoft should offer more to compete with apple. no one wants to go into a store to buy a zune or windows 2010. Any computers they would be better to buy at a bestbuy or something.

Apple's former real estate chief now working on Microsoft stores

Looks like Microsoft will have some very well-informed assistance as it tries to replicate the success of Apple's retail stores. Former Apple real estate chief George Blankenship, who helped lead the early rollout of the Mac maker's retail stores, is working with Microsoft as the Redmond company prepares to launch a retail chain of its own.
