Campers sent packing after first visit to swim club

More than 60 campers from Northeast Philadelphia were turned away from a private swim club and left to wonder if their race was the reason.
"I heard this lady, she was like, 'Uh, what are all these black kids doing here?'
..."When the minority children got in the pool all of the Caucasian children immediately exited the pool," Horace Gibson, parent of a day camp child, wrote in an email. "The pool attendants came and told the black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately."

They need to learn a lesson from Lynchburg. Fill the pool in with dirt so nobody can use it.

I haven't read this story but I am really not surprised. Philadelphia is still very segregated. I am a little shocked that someone actually came out and said that minorities aren't welcome in the pool area. Ok now I have to read this thing.

WOW!!! These people are just dumb! They not only violated people's civil rights, but they openly admit it and say that the reason is the color of their skin in so many words. They are about to get sued!!! I really, really wish they had done that to someone in my family.

What the camp did was ridiculously dumb. I agree.
Playing devil's advocate here, they have a private pool. They are a private club. Shouldn't they be allowed to prevent anyone they want from joining, for any reason? It's like a few years ago with Augusta National Golf Club. They had no female members, and still don't. As a private organization, they had that right.

Another story I read said the kids paid the $$$ for a one-day pass, but when they showed up, they were told they couldn't enter and were given a refund.
Oh well. Another pool allowed the kids to swim.

I've lived in Georgia almost 23 years. I was raised color blind. This is just another example of rich white people stereotyping a minority. I work at a pool as a lifeguard in a decently affluent neighborhood (600,000 and up) and have heard comments about the types of people who move into the neighborhood and come to the pool that aren't "up to par with community standards" even though they always preface the conversation with "I'm not a racist but...." really? come on now.
