Anyone else going to preorder windows 7 upgrade soon? Microsoft is offering a a dirt cheap upgrade option right now for a limited time. The Home Premium version is just $50 and the Professional versions is $100. The normal upgrade prices will be $120 for home premium and 200 for professional. I'm running the release candidate version of Windows 7 right now and absolutely love it, so I'll probably be buying one of those upgrades soon.

I just read that it has sold out in Japan, I might just have to go ahead and go in debt to order this so I can get it at the bargain price...

Maybe a stupid question, but can you upgrade directly from XP to 7, or do you need to have Vista?

I think I heard from Leo Laporte that the upgrade is not the way to go...you are better off buying the full version and doing a complete re-install. I think he said something to the effect that the upgrade programs cause more problems than a fresh install. Also...I don't know if this is true or not, but what happens later on if you have to do a complete re-install of Windows. You probably can not do that from an upgrade disk.

On a separate, but related note, at what point in time will you be able to get Win 7 on new computers? Will they come with Vista, and then you can get upgraded to Win 7?

directly from the official microsoft preorder website
* Running earlier versions?
* If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications.

I'd much rather spend just $50 to upgrade than $200 for the full version. I've done the upgrades from Vista to 7 RC and have had only very minor problems that were easily fixed (and those were problems with programs, nothing major whatsoever), so I'm not the least bit concerned. And seeing as how I very rarely ever have to reinstall Windows, I'd take the extra time to deal with having to reinstall Vista then doing the 7 upgrade if that's what I have to do, it's more than worth the dollar savings.

You will be able to buy computers equipped with 7 out of the box the day 7 is released. YOu can now order computers with an option to get the windows 7 upgrade free.
