I am starting a P90Xish program this summer and am looking for a set of dumbbells. I have already perused ebay, etc. but am hoping to find something a bit more economical. Anyone have any extra dumbbells lying around or have any ideas as to where I could purchase some for a bit cheaper? I can't use the ones with the clips on the end because of how quickly you have to switch from one set to the next.

Play It Again Sports will have some. Or you could go dumpster diving, I got a set of weights that someone threw away at my old apartment complex...they just set them on the ground, next to the dumpster.

Craigslist only had people looking for sets, no one selling any...I am headed to Play it Again after work today. Thanks for the ideas!

As for P90X I am actually doing Cathe Friedrich's STS which is similar to P90X.. I just happen to like Cathe better than Tony! I'll let you know if I make it through the full 3 months!

I'm in the middle of P90x right now. I did 70 days from January to March, but too off 3 weeks. I started again in April, and am about 50 some days into it again. I only do 5 days a week (I don't do Yoga on Thursdays and trade it for the Saturday workout, which is usually Kempo), with three days of Ab ripper added onto the workouts each week. I have done MUCH better these past 8 weeks because I work out with about 8 other people, so if you can find some people to work out with you, you may have better results. Make sure you write down what you do on the forms they provide you, it has helped me increase my numbers (or at least stay the same).

Make sure you get some lighter weights (6 or 8 pounders). Some of the exercises you'll need them. I usually use 15 pound, 20 pound, and 30 pound dumbells. I really would like to get some 25 pound ones, for some of the exercises. Also, push up bars will REALLY help with your wrists.

Don't know where he got it, but my dad got these dumbbells where you can just put weight plates on them (think a dumbbell sized bench press bar), so all you would need is two dumbbells and weight plates. but the weight plates serve a dual purpose because then you can use them on the bench press and other equipment that uses weight plates.

belcherboy, thanks for the helpful tips. I was wondering what weights I should start with. Considering I am a female perhaps I won't be as agressive as 15, 20, and 30...although I would like to think I could work up to that!

One strength training exercise you can do is the 100 pushups/200 situps/200 squats program.

I first started doing the pushup one last fall (at the time, the situps and squats one didnt exist), and had to do an initial max test to see how many I could do. The result was flat out embarrassing, but after just three weeks I was starting to turn into a pushup machine. I ended up not finishing the program because i just got too busy with work and school, but I've started doing all three now and the results, especially on the situps one, are already noticeable after just doing it three times.

Man ive been debating on doing the P90x thing for awhile. I have a gym at my apt complex so i normally just work out there. im interested to know the results as well. Somehow ( and id like to be wrong ) i dont' think in the burg at least there would be 6-8 people who would be willing to try it.

I would go with really light weights, and resistance bands if I were you. There is a P90x Lean workout, that concentrates less on the pull-ups/sit-ups and more on the aerobic exercises. It is still tough, but it is much easier on the girls who don't have the upper body strength of guys. The P90x Lean is the same DVD's, just in a different order. You still do all the exercises, just a lesser rate of the mass producing workouts, and more of the cardio/aerobic ones.

Another thing is if you are trying to lose a fairly large amount of weight (I's say anything over 25 pounds) in the 90 days, you need to try and follow the diet. The girls I work out with are constantly frustrated because they don't lose the weight they want. They go hard core and lose the first 10-15 pounds pretty quickly in the first month, but they don't change their eating habits. They end up being in better shape, but they don't see the results they desire (they want to see definition in their arms and abs mostly), because they are drinking mountain dew, eating chips, pizza, McDonalds, etc.

one of my least favorite caveman workouts is 100 pushups/100 box jumps (30" for me)/100 leg raises/100 squats/100 burpees for time... SUCKS

since you dont have kettlebells, giving you the kettlebell stuff we do wouldn't be of any use.

I like P90x because he changes up the workout after a few weeks. I was doing well for the first 3 weeks, than they changed it up. We were still doing push ups and pull ups, but they were in a different order, and different technique. I actually was REALLY sore after the change, than they changed it up again. I have seen great results!

try starting out with 5,8,10 and 12. we have several women doing caveman with us (cavewoman?) and the more athletic ones are using 12's with the lowest weight being used typically a 5 for really new beginners and an 8 for those who have been there a couple weeks.

granted this is with dumbbell complexes (i.e. 6x6 over 6-8 exercizes, 1 min rest in between sets) but im pretty sure p90x uses dumbbell complexes too? or at least something similar.

Yea, I'm not doing P90X exactly...its Cathe Friedrich's STS with three different mesocycles...kind of like P90X but not exactly.

I really do appreciate all of the tips. I'm not doing this for losing weight as much as incorporating strength training/weights in with the cardio I already do. The only strength/resistance I am doing now is Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred which I do with my 45-60 min. of cardio every day, but since I will have more time this summer I wanted to follow a specific program.
