What's the difference between HTTP and HTTPS? Sometimes HTTPS will work while HTTP doesnt

I just called my buddy who is on acurazine.com and he said he's going to be the first to use it on there and he's going to get some serious rep points haha

http goes out on port 80. that regular web traffic.
https is secure traffic which goes out on port 443.
all of your banking sites and for the most part any sites you log onto will be secure websites. when you connect to a secure site via https an certificate is sent from their server to you. sometimes your computer won't recognize it and ask you if you want to go anyway. once you hit yes, your connection is a direct connection between your computer and their server. this is so noone can get any of the information that is going back and forth.
