WASHINGTON (AP) - The Obama administration is moving to rescind
a federal rule that reinforced protections for medical providers
who refuse to perform abortions and other procedures on moral
grounds.
A Health and Human Services official said Friday the
administration will publish an official notice of its intentions
early next week, and open a 30-day comment period for advocates,
medical groups and the public. The official spoke on condition of
anonymity because the notice has not been finalized.
The Bush administration instituted the rule in its last days. It
has already been challenged in court. Abortion opponents hailed the
Bush regulation, but abortion rights advocates say it could reduce
access to other services, such as birth control.
Basically, if you have a moral objection to performing an abortion, Obama is saying YOU HAVE TO PERFORM IT or face the consequences.

Obama voters have blood of innocents on their hands.

that is so ridiculous...why should you force somebody to perform a procedure they do not feel comfortable performing...and the fact that this is a moral issue to these doctors make it even worse...I was really hoping not to see stuff like this happen...but i guess its just beginning

Who does this apply to? OB/GYN doctors? Podiatrists? Chiropractors?

You'd think just OB/GYN, but try being a pharmacist who doesn't want to stock the morning-after-pill...

What "protections"? Protection from losing your job? Protection from losing your license?

I believe that refers to civil litigation toward a doctor who refuses to perform the service. I could be wrong, but to my recollection, thats whats going on.

On the other hand- what kind of idiot sues their doctor to FORCE them to perform an invasive procedure that he/she is:
  • A. not comfortable performing

    B. probably not very adept at, seeings as he/she DOESN'T DO IT OFTEN as a result
If I'm that doc- I say, "fine" and amend my release forms to say, "I'll probably screw this up, seeing as I've never done an abortion before- so if you die as a result, your family can't sue me."

I'm thinking very few people sign that one.

I really think it deals more with doctors prescribing abortion meds instead of a procedure
