FUNNYMAN EDDIE MURPHY will play The Riddler in the next Batman movie, The Sun can reveal.

The Beverly Hills Cop star, 47, has been signed up by British director CHRISTOPHER NOLAN to reprise the role played by JIM CARREY in 1995’s Batman Forever.

The surprise move follows speculation linking Pirates of the Caribbean star JOHNNY DEPP to the part.

The film, set for a 2010 release, is being developed under the working title Gotham.

Execs have also signed up rising Transformers star SHIA LABEOUF, 22, to play Robin.

CHRISTIAN BALE will return as Bruce Wayne, while MICHAEL CAINE will again play Bruce’s assistant Alfred.

Meanwhile, Brit RACHEL WEISZ is said to be up for the Catwoman role.

I'm not visualizing it unless he plays it Axel Foley-style.

Running as confirmed on Drudge right now. Yeah. I dunno. I didn't see Ledger pulling off his role for a long time either. Shows how much vision I have.

I was just thinking this same thing. But then again, Ledger is an actor. Eddie is... Vampire in Brooklyn.

I think it's weird he's bringing in The Riddler, Catwoman, and Robin all in the same movie.

I think Shai Labeouf will do good. Not so sure about the other two.

Not sure how Robin will fit in with this darker Batman. The whole reason Bob Kane came up with the character to begin with was to brighten Batman up. I have a feeling The Sun is full it; this casting sounds like Batman Forever or something.

this is destined to be a bust with that cast. eddie murphy and shia labeouf, are you kidding me? i cant get past the fact that shia labeouf made his way into the industry by doing stupid disney movies and tv shows, and eddie murphy is just simply retarded.

I'd like to think I trust his decision making at this point because the last few films have been stellar

But I've trusted other movie directors too hoping the 3rd and 4th would be just as good if not better and they were a snooze fest

Check the source. This is coming from a British tabloid.

Besides, Nolan said he would never have Robin in a movie.

I thought I remember reading an interview with Christian Bale saying if they brought Robin in he was out and wouldn't do anymore of the batman movies

has anybody else heard that?

EDIT: I answered my own question

I don't like labeouf as anything more than a comedic side character either. Which he does well (and which this dark series does not need). But don't be bagging on Even Stevens. Fantastic show.

I can see Eddie Murphy in this role...perhaps reprise the persona in "Trading Places". Although, it is going to be VERY tough to out do Carey's rendition.

An innebriated monkey could repeat that performance. Come to think of it, most of Jim Carrey's roles could have been played by impaired primates and it wouldn't have mattered.

I just can't see Eddie Murphy as a villian. All I can think of is "Daddy Day Care."

Read Ed's posts, none of this news is true.

Yeah, this was busted all over the place today.

I normally wouldn't pay any attention to The Sun but Drudge was running it as confirmed.

Come to think of it, I normally don't even trust Drudge until I've seen it on the wire somewhere else.

Still, it gave you suckers something to talk about so I don't feel bad at all.
