A Sea Of Red

I have had a slew of messages about us making a road trip from Houston to Lynchburg and back. Yes, that is what we are wrapping up Thursday. I am typing while waiting on my slab of ribs at Dreamland in Tuscaloosa.

We decided to drive this year for several reasons. First off, airfare was 2 to 3x what we payed last year. We were able to pay for gar for our Tahoe and rooms up & back for about what we would pay for one seat and a car rental. This way we were able to bring our whole family of 5 and still have money left over to have fun at stops along the way.

I love family road trips as much as Chevy Chase. Anybody else still enjoy the crosscountry adventures?

I love road trips. Granted, I dont have a family yet, so that might change things. But theres nothing better than getting in the car on one side of the country and getting out in another.

I love road trips like that. Back as a kid...we would drive from Cocoa Beach Florida to Virginia to far West Tennessee and back to Florida every summer we lived down there...and that was before much of the interstate was completed. Good times.

Yeh, I made the trip for homecoming from Cocoa Beach this past week. Definitely good times besides for the weather. Also, good pick on the Barbeque choice Sly. I have been to the one in Birmingham and it is the best I've had.

What was the family driving in those days, Fumble? My dad had a couple of Chrysler Newports--one from 1964 (push button transmission on the dash) and another from 1972 (with a 400 under the hood).

My favorite vacations were from WV to Lake Arrowhead Campgound in Myrtle Beach or to Maryland for Oriole games.

We had a 65 or 66 Pontiac Catalina...
...and with no seat belt laws...I had the whole back seat to myself, having no sibs.

I go there every year for NRB...it's unreal....it's like 3 cities all under 1 roof...and they're expanding!!! It's nuts

thanks fumble. i'll take this into consideration.

I fly all the time for work. As a result the novelty wore off years ago. When I have time, driving with the fam is my first choice. Now Mrs. Sly still would rather fly but she has no interest in it right now with small children.

The ribs were terrific although they were too spicy for my barbecue lovin' son. We just stopped for a potty break with Louisiana looking like our landing point tonight.

BTW we took the kids to CJ's old employer in Chatty to see the Choo Choo. We also rose the Incline to the top of Lookout Mtn. We've had a great trip back.

what part of louisiana are you in?

LOVE roadtrips. As soon as my son is a bit older, we're going to start taking one each summer.

My favorite vacation as a kid was one fall when we took ten days and drove through the northeastern US. Saw Plymouth Rock, the Liberty Bell, the Empire State Building, the Baseball Hall of Fame .... Had great stories to tell when we got back, too.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Love road trips, but it's not the same when you're the one driving as opposed to being the kid in the back, I like to see everything. We drove all over the country as a kid, even making the treck from Connecticut to California and back. Of course, we had one of those big white vans and my dad custom built the interior, so there was a place to sleep in there. I'm also very resistant to get a vehicle with a DVD player, I'd rather my kids enjoy the country than watch a movie they've seen a hundred times already.

Get the dvd player for your small kids. You will enjoy your trip much more. We have driven all over the US and it is a great time! Sure glad gas prices are coming down to make it more affordable. By the way, the bigger the car/van/suv the better!

We spent the night in Red Stick (aka Baton Rouge). We are pushing home to Houston this afternoon.

My kids have loved the trip although my littlest wasn't crazy about being strapped into a car seat for such long stretches.

I just got back from a long day trip to Rural Hall, NC via 29 South and routes 158 and 65 (I may never trust Mapquest again).

I live ten minutes from Rural Hall. I could've told you a much quicker way that that.
