Golf Clubs

I'm looking at getting some new irons (well fairly new irons) on ebay. I've been playing Titleist DCI 990s for about 7 years and it's time for a change. I'm looking at the Titleist AP1 irons. Anybody here have any suggestions about those clubs? They're going for between $350-$400 for 4-PW. They're supposed to be players' irons with a bit more forgiveness than my 990s. I'm a 7.5 handicap on paper but I'm probably closer to a 10 due to lack of play the last couple years. Thoughts?

do you prefer blades or cavity back? To me, that's the biggest question. Cavity backs are reportedly more forgiving.

Regardless of what you purchase: my advice would be to take the 3 and maybe even 4 irons out RIGHT AWAY, and add a lob or gap wedge to the pitching and sand wedge. I can't tell you how many times I was glad to have that 60 deg wedge in the bag.

You are better off (at a 5-10 handicap) going with a 5 wood/fairway metal or even a 7 or rescue/utility club than banging away w/ a freakin 3 iron. I threw mine further than I could hit it (and more accurately)

I don't know....I can't hit fairway woods, but I can consistently carry my 3-iron around 225.....quite accurately.

Equipment makes a difference in golf. If you are interested in performance (sounds like it if you are a single digit handicap) you should be professionally fitted for clubs. Any other advice that comes from a message board is worth exactly what you paid for it. Actually, from this board, it might even be costly. :)

I haven't played enough this year to trust my swing for a fitting. I'm probably going to buy a standard set on ebay and have them fitted next year once I get my swing where I want it. The sets I'm looking at don't have a 3 iron anyway and I have hybrid 3 and 4 as well as a 5 wood which I could throw in the bag if I wanted so I've got no use for either a 3 or 4 iron really. I have both 56 and 60 degree Cleveland wedges and some of the sets are 4-GW so I should have everything covered with the set if I buy one.

EDIT: I'm definitely looking at cavity back irons. My brother who is a scratch golfer (played golf at LU 2001-2003) bought blades and he can't hit them so I know I'm not good enough for them. I know the workability is great with blades but I don't wouldn't the tiny sweet spot consistently enough to score well with them.

i played a few rounds with some mizuno mp32 which are blades and they were awesome. but you can't hit them straight. at least i couldn't and i'm a 10 right now. around 2000 i was near scratch when i was playing 4 times a week.
i can play the cut and fade a bit but i'm not experienced enough to judge it....you sure do look cool hitting shots like bubba watson. but only if they land on the green.

i hit ping eye 2 copies. i hit them EXACTLY like the original ping eye 2's i used to have and they were 1/2 the price.

you can find decent deals on ebay and online. i'm eventually going to pickup a tour preferred set of taylormades...

the mizuno clubs are nice too

Don't know what kind of budget you're on, but Adams (www.adamsgolf.com) makes some nice clubs for a decent price. When I was looking for a set a while back I was really set on getting some of their hybrids/fairway woods. But I never did get the money together, so I've been stuck with my generics which work fine, they hit straight.

I really don't want to spend more than $400 for a set of irons right now. I can get basically any set I want for somewhere near that on ebay if they're gently used.

The 704 can be had for under $200 on ebay right now. The 804 are less than $100 (graphite shafts though). The G10 is supposed to be a good club and the price isn't too bad but I'm just not a Ping irons guy. I'm not sure what it is but they just don't look good to me at address. I love their putters though.

I swung several Ping's back in the day: Zing 2, Eye 2, etc. I've hit a couple friends sets over the past couple years and they hit fine I just think they look a little odd. I like the Taylor Made drivers. I'm still swinging the old R5 Dual from several years ago. I'll probably upgrade that next year.
