I know some of you guys are in the corporate world, and more and more students want smaller laptops. I was just wondering if anyone had a Netbook style laptop? I just purchased the Dell Mini 9 and looking forward to getting it, but just wanted to know how yall liked yours.

Also, this wont be my everyday laptop, I wont be running it for really anything more then email and web browsing...I'll leave the Adobe usage for my other laptop and desktop...one thing is for sure with these new Netbooks, you cant beat the price...the Mini is starting at $350

Have you used that? I'm not opposed to sending this thing back if it doesnt meet expectations...I heard that laptop was pretty good

I just tried to buy an acer aspire one 8.9 inch netbook from the Tigerdirect in Durhum. They had one on display, and had a coupon for $349. It's a netbook with Windows XP and a SD slot and wifi.

But they didn't have them in stock...even though they still had the sign out and a display, and the coupon was form 8/31/08-9/06/08 and I went there on 09/04/08...grr.

I looked at the Asus eee...but most of those have the Linux operating system. They have one with XP...but it's a lot more expensive. Around 250-350 for Linux and $549 for XP.

Everex makes a cloudbook that looks interesting with XP for $399 at Tigerdirect.

But, being as cheap as I am...I bought a used Fujitsu Stylistic LT 500 tablet PC with Windows 2000, a wireless G card, and a CF slot, a portable keyboard, and I already have a 512 mb cf card left over from an old camera...I also got a USB powered CD-rom (it has one USB slot), a case, and car adapter on Ebay for $141 total after shipping.

There's a netbook version of the Fujitsu selling on ebay with Win XP for around $235 that looks like a good deal as well.

the eee pc is ok for just browsing the interet...thats about it....unless you are ok running ubuntu, xp takes up most of the memory.

the mini9 is nice. its a bit more expensive though.

hp has a decent one and and fujitsu make rrrrreallly nice smaller laptops but they are pricy.

i use a sharp actius it doesn't have a ton ram but i like it alot.

This only has a 900mhz and 6gb SSD though.....That could be a little slow

look at the kid trying to type on that computer (first picture when you click on gallery). even little people have a hard time typing on them, that's one of the many reasons why I don't like them.

I've never used one. They have just gotten really good reviews if you're using them for very basic tasks (like you said you were). Of course that was when they first came out. Other companies may have surpassed them.

I just thought Id follow up with this....I got it in today and have been using it all day. Its unreal, you can take it anywhere without feeling like its a hassle like I do with my 9 pounder laptop...its quick, very stable and they really kept the running app's to a minimum so it doesnt get bogged down.


Well worth the $350 base price. It is what you would expect, a ultra portable netbook for documents, emails and internet nothing more nothing less.


Oh and I dont think its been announced yet but they also included a Verizon PCI card built in where you can subscribe to the wireless dial up monthly and have internet anywhere you go

Bumping this. Im probably getting one in the next few weeks as my desktop and laptop keep crashing due to no memory, no virtual memory, to crappy to use. Anyways, anyone know any knew information as to whats the best route to go with netbooks? I was hesitant about asus, but then I realized I was thinking it was acer, and so asus is back on the list unless someone knows about it.

i was really close to getting a netbook, one of the dell mini 12s, then I realized you are basically getting a laptop with crappy hardware specs - even worse than the laptop I already had which was getting to the point where it was just too freaking slow...

It really depends on what your goal for the thing is. If you're going to only surf the web, reply to email, etc. then go for it. That really is about the most you can expect to get out of them, though. They don't have the horsepower for anything else.

So, if that's what you're after, I'd advise you look for the model with the best combination of battery life and a comfortable keyboard.

yeah all i want it for is schoolwork. check emails, write papers, do online research, occasionally watch videos and whatnot. im not looking to do like music editing or anything on it.

Like can they handle internet, itunes, and word running at the same time and not suck it up?

I later broke down and bought an asus eee. I don't like it at all. Stay away from asus...terrible battery life and very slow.

I don't know if it can do that, but I do know iTunes is a memory hog on Windows and was a major cpu hog on my old computer which would blow out a netbook. on my new one its no problem at all though.

Our tech guru mentioned something today about Apple unveiling their new netbook soon. Any truth to that rumor?

how long ago was that? everywhere ive looked online now is saying the asus is one of the best ones.

Best netbook out right now is the Asus 1005HA 10.5 hours battery life. Wireless N and Bluetooth. This thing is sick and you can get it for $340 right now which is a steal.

If you want a cheap, refurb netbook, the woot off has one right now for $165 shipped. Might be worth getting, if you want to just check one out.

That rumor has been around for at least a year, if not more, and everytime Apple has a major press conference or press event that rumor gets brought back up again. So basically, don't believe it until it's official.

Apple has said over and over they won't be getting into the netbook game because "we don't know how to make a computer for less than $500 that isn't total crap." (That's a Steve Jobs quote, as I'm sure some of you could have guessed.) Having said that, they always deny they're entering a product space right up until the day they announce that they've got a product for that space.

Based on the rumors I've read (and this is purely speculation on my part) I think it's going to be something that competes with netbook functionality in a "think different" kind of way. It will probably be a little more expensive, too. Most likely I think you're looking at a 10" touchscreen device that's going to use some derivative of the iPhone version of Mac OS X. It won't be a tablet Mac and it won't just be a big iPod Touch. I think it's going to land somewhere in between. I'd guess about $700-800.

Just speculation from me. We'll see. Hard to know anything about what Apple will do until one of the Chinese plants starts manufacturing the product.
