Does anybody else get these annoying credit card checks in the mail like every week from some credit card you didn't know you had? That's exactly what I need BOA, blank checks with my name attached to it floating around in the mail on a weekly basis. If only I could go back in time to college, I'd tell myself that the free T-shirt and fake oakleys aren't worth it.

I've been with BB&T up until I realized their customer service SUCKS....I switched over to Carter Bank (who is a donor to Liberty University, and at one time one of the only banks that would lend to the school) and Wachovia, Hairy Williams (former LU basketball player) is up there at the Wards Rd branch.

places like BB&T, BOA, Wachovia could careless about the average customer, thats why I like these family owned banks, although I will say that Wach has done a great job so far with me.

I absolutely love BB&T and have never had a single problem with anything I have ever done there. My parents use them and our business uses them. Nothing but absolutely fantastic customer service for us.

I bet they aren't great at customer service when you call with questions about wiper blades, plasma monitors, and google. :P

only problem I have against BB&T is I got a CD there for a year or two (cant remember how long I had it) and asked them to put the financial info for it on my monthly statement every month. they manage to do that for maybe two months, then they just stop ding it despite me calling and making the request again. everytime they say it will be on my next statement, but it never is.

Plug, plug. Did you just get a free toaster for making that sales pitch?

I just wanted to point out that while it may have been bad for one person, it's been great for us.

they don't show month by month on the website. all i get to see is the current month. that's not what I want. and God forbid I accidentally type my password wrong just one time, if I do that I get locked out of my account and have to call BB&T to get them to reset my password. it's much easier for me to just have them do what they tell me they are going to do instead of me having to call them to either (1) do what they told me they were going to do, or (2) have to call them to reset my password after I inevitably type it wrong at some point in time (and trust me that's not as simple as it sounds)

edit: i just logged in to bb&t online. i cant check activity on teh CD. I have no idea at all how much I gain in interest on it during any month, so unless they put it on my monthly statement, I have no way of getting that information unless I call them, which is very inconvenient - and since I have asked them several times to do it, and have been told everytime they will do it, I shouldn't ahve to find other ways to figure out. I should just be able to open up my monthly statement and have the information that I requested and was told I would receive.

way to take my topic and go completely in the wrong direction. I was talking about credit cards and I happen to have a lot of them that are owned by BOA and they send me these annoying "convenience" checks. Yes, it's very convenient for me to have to shred them every week. Or if I was tempted to use it, pay 3%.

I can't believe I am going to agree with a Winthrop fan... But you are dead on... Folks in the Hill City should join Central Virginia Federal Credit Union... Go to the Wal-Mart Branch on Wards Rd... ask for Kevin.. Tell him I sent you:) Hands down they have lower rates... I don't understand why people do lending through big banks... 9.9 times out of 10 you will not beat a CU.. Sorry, rant over..

Actually most online banks will beat a Credit Union. It all depends on what you're borrowing money for, some banks/credit unions are better than others for certain types of loans. That's why it's good to keep accounts open at multiple institutions. Always shop around.

I really just have 1 that I use but I have a ton of accounts that are "open" that I never even got a card for. I watch them on my credit report just to be safe, but it's all the fault of those d----- bags that sit outside of marriot and get students to sign up for them in exchange for free worthless junk. When you're a student, you're too retarded to know what you're doing. You just see free stuff for filling out some paperwork.

Why don't you just close them, limit your risk and your junk mail.

Shopping around is always a good idea---but in general credit unions will beat banks (no matter what type), the reason being that credit unions are essentially not for profit institutions while obviously banks (for the most part) are not. I don't know much about borrowing rates as I don't have any debt save a mortgage, but maintenence fees are almost always lower for investment vehicles at credit unions because they are not trying to churn a big of a profit as possible, only enough to keep them operational. You will almost always get a better rate of return at credit unions in comparison to the same vehicle at a bank. You will also get much better customer service at a union as well as a say in how it is run as you are essentially a "shareholder."

Closing accounts, even if they are unused goes against your credit rating. Like I've got a Capital One card that actually hurts my rating by not reporting my maximum available amount on that card, but closing it altogether hurts the rating more. So I just don't use it.

I have a free checking account at BB&T just so I have some place close by I can talk to but any investment vehicle is done with online banks. They will always beat a CU. They can afford to because they have virtually no overhead in comparison to a physical bank or CU.

I must have found the one credit union that does then, b/c I looked at the online options and couldn't find anything better. I don't know all the overhead costs, but a major online bank will most likely have larger overhead costs than a regional CU, even if they don't have brick and mortar operations.

I have small accounts in three different credit unions, just as a "just in case", but most of my transactions are done through a traditional bank. And really, the only reason we still have the bank account is because it's one that I opened in college and has zero fees or requirements attached to it, so it just makes it easier to use.
