WASHINGTON — Barack Obama selected Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware late Friday night to be his vice presidential running mate, according to a Democratic official, balancing his ticket with an older congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues.

Biden, who has twice sought the White House, is a Catholic with blue-collar roots, a generally liberal voting record and a reputation as a long-winded orator.

I think it is a good pick for him. He is going to be a great attack dog for Obama in this campaign. He has the foreign experience to throw some heat at McCain, and probably spill a few national secrets along the way. Obama supporters will hate to hear this, but I think it is a play out of the Bush/Rove playbook when they added Chaney to the ticket. I just hope they can find a better word then GRAVITAS.
It also shores up his liberal base and wins him, ironically enough, some support on some other issues. Overall a GREAT pick for him. I see it more as a move to shore up support (which has been eroding) then a move that will attract voters.
On the other hand if McCain picks Romney, I see THAT as a move to both shore up AND attract new voters to him, but that is another topic for another time.
(Of course since I Have not seen Hillary with a spike through her heart yet, I wont be 100% convinced about Obama's candidacy until he is actually nominated!!(

My thoughts exactly, Purple, but I really thought Obama would choose a non-Hillary female VP to attract the women's vote.

I'm sorry if I can't accept the Great Plagiarizer as a serious candidate. I think this is a terrible pick for Obama b/c the whole "Change" mantra goes out the window. He could not have picked a bigger career Washington insider for a running mate. This is the equivalent of a candidate running a campaign on a platform of family values and then picking Larry Flynt to come along.

Brilliant pick for Obama...offsetting his biggest weakness. It sounds like he has some good handlers around him and that he listens to them.

There are a lot of closet Obama supporters on this board...

Newsweek is calling him the "Anti-Cheney."

Guess that means he won't be behind the curtain pulling the puppet strings.

biden is a more qualified presidential candidate than obama. that's all I have to say on the topic.

Biden plays very well in the Philly suburbs which are key in a large pivotal state and also with hawkish moderates that McCain has been touting. He's a pretty good attack dog which will allow Obama to take the high road. He does have the propensity to say some stupid things like Indians at 7-11 so he should make things interesting.

I think this raises Tom Ridge's profile in the GOP VP decision process.

Biden gives Obama an "anchor". But not in the sinking way. People who want "change" (even though they can't define it) will like to see someone "seasoned" along side so that this whole "change" thing doesn't get out of hand.
As for hte 7-11 comment , I never put much stock into it. How many of us have said similar things. Who cares, I thought it was funny. Did the Simpson's ever have a "Biden" character stop by Apu's store in Springfield?? THAT would be funny. OBAMA and BIDEN in Springfield. THat and the JFK mayor would be a SCREAM!!

Biden isnt a bad pick. He says a lot of dumb things, but so does Obama's wife and he still likes her, so he must be attracted to it. All Obama can do is read from a teleprompter anyway, maybe Biden will learn to just say those things and it wont happen anymore.

This is a horrible pick, but for Obama it's pretty much on par. The only people who like this pick are people who like Biden or hardcore Democrats. The guy is an arrogant sleezeball and a career politician. Change we can believe in. Obama for hope. Yes we can! But on the bright side he does look like he could get his portrait on the $2 bill if that ever gets brought back.

No matter who Obama picked he would have been criticized. I don't think it helps or necessarily hurts him. It does give the GOP. more ammo to fire up the base, which is a good thing.

I certainly thinks getting a career politician hurts more than someone like Byah(Sp?) would have...I thought that would be a brilliant choice seeing his stances on abortion and other things that could help swing these conservatives sitting on the fence.

Regardless of its questioned substance, Obama had the whole "change" thing working. The sell gets tougher with Biden as VP.

It turns out that Biden is familiar with change after all. He used to be bald.

Bayh would have been a difficult choice for Democrats because it would have given up a Democratic Senate seat. Each party wants to move closer to a filibuster proof Senate with 60 or more members. The governor of Indiana, a Republican, likely would have selected a Republican to replace the seat.
