1. The old charger/data cord will still work...you just no longer get HDMI functionality so its functionality thats changed, not any use at all.
2. 99% of the other companies today are using a generic microusb for charging because its universal...not something that is only good with one brand. That's the same crap motorola and others tried to pull back in the 90's
I actually think this is a good move for Apple. I still think they should have gone with a microusb and if you dont then at least let it be a magsafe but they needed to get smaller and it sounds like they'll be giving people a few adaptor as well.
You just no longer get HDMI functionality out of a cable that used to give you that. So, it is kind of the same. My point was that companies make changes to this sort of thing often and it isn't to get people to upgrade to a new cable or to charge them for an adapter.
In this case, Apple wanted to shrink the physical size of the connector so that they could make the phone thinner. It's the same reason they dropped legacy ports on the next-gen MacBook Pros. You can't make the laptop thinner than an RJ45 jack and still include an RJ45 jack. The housing for the old dock connector is thicker than the new iPhone design would have allowed. Based on what I've read, they've delayed this change for two models now. I'm glad they're dumping it, and I'm glad they're utilizing Thunderbolt for all those kinds of peripheral jacks on the next-gen MBPs.
The dock connector is also more than just charging. A micro-USB plug doesn't have enough pins or bandwidth to support all of the dock connector functionality. They'd have to drop that too in order to support micro-USB on the board.
P.S. If you live in Europe, you'll get a Micro-USB charging adapter with your new iPhone 5, because it's the law there. Since the dock connector is more than just charging, though, Apple will always stick with it.
