SumItUp wrote: March 25th, 2020, 9:52 am Has anyone seen any reference to how small business will be aided? I have seen the $367 billion number, but not with any details about how a small business can access the funds.
Just heard it straight from the senate floor. Ask your bank or other financial institution about a 7a loan.

Ballcoach not know about social distancing.

Perhaps, try technological distancing next?

As for small businesses, those grants they used to give behind natural disasters are essentially off the table based onwhat I am hearing. But loans are going to be happening regardless of which version of the stimulus package ultimately passes.

Apparently the Senate bill includes a provision the dems insisted on that excludes any business associated with anyone having anything to do with the White House from getting loans and SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDES THE SON-IN -LAW OF THE PRESIDENT.

I can imagine what Trump's response was. "Really? Really? Fine. Don't want it. Don't need it."

Not sure if anyone watched Gov. Northam's daily 2pm press conference on the virus, but he specifically called out Jerry and LU for inviting students back. Said something to the effect that he should follow the example of other college leaders and keep Lynchburg safe.

Edit - https://wset.com/news/coronavirus/what- ... else-to-go

"I have heard the press reports that Liberty University is inviting and welcoming students back to their campus in Lynchburg," Gov. Northam said. "We have heard too many mixed messages around the country about COVID-19 and this is yet another example. I would suggest that President Falwell look to the actions of the leaders of Virginia's flagship universities for how to set a strong example in this health crisis and to please reconsider his message that invites and encourages students to return to campus," Gov. Northam said.

"What could we possibly do different than obey all executive orders?" Falwell questioned. "The Department of Health confirmed that [Tuesday]. There are more students in Lynchburg living off campus in apartments they have rented than we do on campus."

2 senators can't do that. The Democrat who has the power here is Pelosi, who can try to hold them hostage by threatening to not pass it in the house if she doesn't get what she wants. They need to call her bluff. Make her face the wrath of the American people if she holds this up over airline emissions and other irrelevant crap.

Based on all the crap still in it I’m glad it’s being held up. Some of it was shed in the last 24 hours. Let’s hope they keep shedding. How do the Kennedy Center and a specific school and College get Grants but businesses get loans?

Which schools? Just curious.

With the article in News & Advance today about the Mayor being unhappy with Liberty, there was a photo of the east side of William's Stadium. Underneath the photo there was this caption:

"Liberty University's football stadium is empty as students were welcomed back to the university's campus Tuesday"

Very poor journalism. The football stadium is always empty on 24th of March.

Maybe the N&A should have taken a photo of the empty softball stadium. After all, we were originally scheduled to host UVA in softball yesterday.

Gallaudet and Howard University. There was also a prep school in there but I think that’s now out. Trump did just say that the Democrats wanted $35 million for the Kennedy Center but he talked them down to $25 Said it wasn’t something he wanted but the Democrats did and he has to give them something
I still think it’s crap

Gallaudet is a university for the deaf, and they probably need the money. Howard has an endowment of 693 million.

The Oxford research suggests the pandemic is in a later stage than previously thought and estimates the virus has already infected at least millions of people worldwide. In the United Kingdom, which the study focuses on, half the population would have already been infected. If accurate, that would mean transmission began around mid-January and the vast majority of cases presented mild or no symptoms.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/oxford-study ... 00162.html

If this could be proven, it’d take the argument for opening back up around Easter to actually possible.

$183 million endowment. Private University. Gallaudet is fine

Apparently the unemployment benefit portion of the bill pays $600/week on top of whatever the states maximum benefit is, which in most states would work out to at least $25/hr for full time workers. There will be a ton of people making substantially more not working than they made working. The republicans are pushing for an amendment to limit benefits to 100% of their previous income for the obvious reason that paying more will be a disincentive to work, and the Dems are going crazy.

The longer this draws out the more hopeful I am that more stuff like this comes to light and gets eliminated. I mean $2 trillion dollars directly to tax payers could do a lot of good. IMO more than these crazy carve outs

That would be $10k to everyone over the age of 18.

If you want someone to do something, you have to give them an incentive. If we’re asking people not to work right now, the incentive has to be greater than what they were previously doing. I don’t know that $25/hr minimum is that incentive, but giving more that what they were making isn’t a crazy idea.

It is not a great idea for the exact reason you just said. The inventive is for them to GO to work. All this bill is supposed to do is keep things at status quo. We are asking people to not lose their businesses and pay their employees. Paying them over what they are making makes 0 sense

They are not being ASKED not to work, they are being TOLD not to work. No financial incentive is needed for that.

Mitch dropped the ball in letting the bill get to the floor with this in it. Apparently nobody did the math. Should have hashed it out in committee. Now it doesn't matter how logical their arguments are, the Republicans are going to look like they are the ones holding it up. I doubt if they have the 60% they need to amend it, so as much as I hate it, they are probably better off just letting it go.

My understanding is that in this situation, the incentive is absolutely not to go to work. It’s to stay home. If they want us to stay home for months at a time, and if they’re not pausing mortgage/rent payments, then I’m all for paying a little bit more.
