I write this as one who spent six years as an RA and an RD. Those at the top of the department (old hags like myself are still among my best friends, albeit my time was before the current student appeals process mentioned and I am of no acquaintance to anyone currently in the dean's office). I'll try to look at this from both points of view. First, the dean gave reps in such a way that SJ will not have to pay a fine (unless he screws up down the road) which leads me to believe he did not take this too seriously. At the end of the year, the reps go away and are forgotten. Second, if the girl makes a complaint (newspaper, mansion, civil), he can say he took care of it (without fines for SJ). I've done that many times because I did not feel the incident merited a fine. The girl obviously has no legs to make this sort of complaint but sometimes the facts get lost in the initial assertion and the dean is covering himself. The Julie Carroll pics were probably a little over the top on innuendo but at least they fell within dress code regs, showed no alcohol etc. There were some posts comparing female body parts with certain types of food that were out of line, though, they may have subsequently been taken down, I'm not sure. Anyway, SJ had nothing to do with those comments but perhaps the dean hopes others will tone down their retoric based upon SJ'd reps.
More importantly from my perspective, however, is the actions of the couple in an open classroom showing total disregard for the school's policies, their fellow classmates and the professor, who of all people now knows he had no control over his class thanks to this dynamic duo but more importantly, can't rely on the dean's office for support as they apparently implicitly now condone such behavior by looking the other way. Deciding not to enforce the stated policies on this couple makes relations all the more difficult with the faculty as well as the RAs and RDs who need to show some semblance of consistency as they judiciously enforce the policies. In support of the dean, however, he could have only levied reps on the couple if he had the support of his female dean counterpart.
