VMI's guys posted about this earlier today and I wondered about the connection.

http://www.roanoke.com/news/breaking/wb/302690
the Roanoke Times wrote:BLACKSBURG — Three Blacksburg men, including Virginia Tech kicker Cody Journell, have been arrested and charged with breaking and entering after an alleged home invasion late Wednesday night at the home of a Virginia Tech basketball player.

Journell, 20, Matthew D. Dunton, 23, and Matthew I. Brady, 21, were charged with a Class 2 felony due to the alleged use of a dangerous weapon. A prosecutor said in court this afternoon a gun was involved.

Police responded to a residence on Lee Street near downtown in reference to a physical altercation around 10 p.m. Wednesday. According to warrants filed in Montgomery County General District court, the incident revolved around some sort of drug transaction.

Journell, Dunton and Brady are accused of entering the house of Dorenzo Hudson and Sean Allen with a weapon, with the intent to commit larceny, assault and battery, or another felony, according to warrants. Hudson is a starter on the Virginia Tech men's basketball team.

The three defendants appeared in court this afternoon before Judge Randall Duncan.

According to court testimony from Chief Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Mary Pettitt, the three showed up at Hudson and Allen's residence last night because they said Allen stole marijuana from Dunton.

Dunton knocked on the door holding a pizza box while Journell and Brady hid in the bushes, Pettit said. When Hudson answered, Dunton drew a gun while the other two rushed inside the house, she said.

After not finding Allen, they ran outside and left in a car driven by an unnamed person, who was not charged, she said.

yeah... that's pretty bad. Sorry to hear it; hate seeing ANY kids screw their future like this.

what a shame.

Grm, would love to have you expand on that statement as well. Pulling a 'gun' and committing a crime in order to obtain an illegal substance seem serious. Not sure what you mean by ,not as guilty as it appears' :dontgetit Although I don't believe impersonating a pizza delivery guy is as serious as impersonating an officer.

Well, originally, they had used the term "deadly weapon" and I believe that the "soft pellet gun" that he did use would make it less serious. In fact, some of the Roanoke writers said the exact thing.

I didn't say it was smart, in fact, it was stupid. I just pray that Matt will get back on the right track.

There's nothing I can do to defend this, and I am not attempting to do so. I love Matt, and am praying for him. What more can I say?

Nothing, you said all you can when something sad like this happens.

I hope that this, combined with the 1 or 2 negative, RD supporting posters , doesn't cause people to justify dragging the Dunton family through the mud. This is a sad story but sometimes you have to reach rock bottom to finally start coming around. I hope and pray that is what happens in this situation.

I went to the Thursday night Tech/UNC game in November. After the game I was on Market Street, walked around and went into a bar (the one upstairs, a block up from Moes). Wow! I can't begin to describe the pervasiveness of drug use...I don't need to discuss the drinking part. Very sad.

And recently there were some investigative reports about the growing drug culture at Old Dominion. Then we have our own issues at LU...but I'll always remember E.V. Hills classic sermon, The Hog Pen Trail, where he offers that it is never too late to turn around and go back home.

I hope we never lose our identity...the small things, like the three co-eds quietly singing perfect harmony to the background praise music while waiting in line at the bookstore. One of thousands of reasons why LU is special.

EVERY school has its unseemly characters (see: Asa Chapman, the LAX dude at UVA), and my prayer is for these kids that they will be able to learn their lesson, pay their debt to society and then go on to make something of their lives. Prayers for the families to be comforted over this heartbreaking situation, especially at this time of year.

PA may help out on this but I think the intent weighs a lot into it. So while it may have only been a pellet gun the intent was to pass it off as a real gun. If I recall correctly that would change had they actually fired the weapon. If it was a real gun it would have ramped up the severity and penalties and if it was a pellet gun it would have ratcheted down the charges. I may be off but 'friends in the business' were discussing it.

I was reading about this in the hometown paper and the story said that the parents of the three said theyd put their houses up if they had been granted bail to raise the money if need be. A sad situation all around...

It's a heartbreak, and I'm trying to fit Romans 8:28 into it, praying that this will be the huge lesson Matt needs, and that, somehow, the penalties will not be disasterous in his life and the lives of others close to him.

God has certainly used negative situations to acheive positive results in the past. Maybe, as one song says, "He'll do it again!"

LMAO, my old man told me if I ended up in jail for breaking the law, I better enjoy my stay. He would never put the house up for me in that situation. As a matter of fact I would rather remain in jail then face my old man.

My dad used the term Big House a lot. And he was not talking about Michigan football or an addition to the home!

My parents were the same way...in fact they said that if I ever got arrested, that I should not call them because if I did they would a) not take the call and b) definitely not bail me out

i mean seriously though, how many incidents is that involving tech in the past 5 years. I've never been a fan of the athletics programs as i have seen a ton of dirty stuff that goes on since i work in the roanoke area in banking. I knew the atheltics program was dirty but the last few years would make me ashamed of my school if we had that many things going on. Hopefully he can get his life straightened out, the rock bottom statement is 100% true.

I'm pretty sure no one can talk until they have been in this situation... those who are making light of this, I truly pray you never have to experience the heart ache my family is going through as we speak.

Yes, Matt has made some stupid decisions, but our God is bigger than all of this. The Bible points out that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23), which means that nobody is in a position to be judgmental about another person's actions.

I am completely heartbroken that the brother I love and adore so much, the one I have spent Christmas mornings with me for as long as I can remember will be absent tomorrow...but I am hopeful because I know God is faithful, He can and WILL us this for good. We may not see it tomorrow, we may not see it next month, but I know the Lord will use this for good.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas. Those who have kept our family in your prayers, I am so thankful for you & appreciate it more than you know.

"Sometimes the Lord calms the storm, sometimes He lets the storm rage and calms His child."

Merry Christmas.

I agree with you.

I, however, am not sure who was making light of this situation. I was pretty happy with how everybody responded and surprised too.

I also hope your family can still enjoy Christmas. I know how its like to have a sibling not exactly go down the right path around Christmas time. Prayers for you and your family
