Unfortunately the instructions were very vague so the result will be up to interpretation. Each assignment is due by 12 noon on Friday each week which I think is ridiculous for a DLP class but oh well. The assignment was 12.5% of my grade so hopefully I did okay! Wish me luck...
when do you find out what the assignment is?
The assignments are posted online so I got that it's just not very detailed as to what the professor is expecting for the exercises. He just listed exercise numbers from the book and we go from there. He didn't say how long the responses should be.

so he puts all the assignments for the entire semester at the beginning of the semester or what?

Yeah, the whole semester's assignments are listed in the Course Content section of Blackboard prior to the beginning of the semester.

Noon Friday??!!! Both of my summer DLP classes were midnight Sunday. By noon Friday I was just finishing the reading and starting my Ed Psych writing assignment.

so the professor gives you every single assignment at the beginning of the semester, and you are complaining about having to have it done by the end of the school week?

Yes I am. Every class I've taken via DLP is setup with all the assignments given prior to the beginning of the semester. All of them besides this one had the assignments due on Sunday night at midnight (I think one was due Saturday night at midnight). Pretty much everybody that's taking the classes with me is working full-time and having the first week's assignments posted on Monday and due by noon on Friday the same week is a bit tougher than we're all used to. Most people don't have the time during the week to put in a lot of hours so Saturday and Sunday are typically when most of the work gets done.

Okay I thought you were complaining about it for the entire semester, not just the first week.

Business policy DLP is actually a joke..hard part is just making yourself actually do it...will you learn much prob not...but if you are doing dlp you probably already have a full time job and its all about getting the degree now.

It depends on what you want out of it. I used it to finish up about 10 classes over the past 15 months to complete my degree that had been on hold for a few years. It has served its purpose but I don't feel that I've gotten a high quality education in the process. It hasn't all been easy by any means (Corporate Finance) but it seems that I am not learning nearly what I would have in class. It's just a means to and end for me.

This Policy class is pretty tough. I just submitted my second individual case analysis (week 4). I only got an 80, which is a C, on the first one so I'm not really excited right now. We just got our first group paper back tonight (week 2) and I got a 73! The professor basically tore it to shreds. I was the group leader and communicated well with the group so I'd be shocked if the peer review hurt my grade at all. A 73 is a D in the class so we've got to get things on the right track. The directions for everything are so vague that I am basically taking a stab in the dark to figure out what is actually expected each week. I'm getting pretty nervous about actually passing with a C.

pshh we found out like 2 days before it was due that we were comparing the company we had to the wrong industry. it was really vague as to what they did so we basically guessed. I called dr. george and he was like..."oh...well i would just do it to this industry...i didn't know they did that other stuff"....so we had to pretty much start from scratch...got an A...we were awesome...me mostly but my teammates were ok too..

Here are the instructions:
Read the attached document.
Complete Experiential Exercise 4A, Step 1.
Complete Case 1: Apple Computer Inc., page 3 in the case section of the text by answering the four questions on page 11 (last page of the case).
Place the results of the experiential exercise and case on a single document and post it via the link below by Friday, 12PM ET, of Week Four. Include your name and the number of the exercise(s)/case on the attachment (ex: 1B,Step 3). Late assignments will be penalized.

We had to do 20 ratio calculations on Google's 2004 financial data which was for the first part (4a, Step 1), pretty straightforward. We then had to answer 4 questions on Apple based on a 6 page case in the text.

1. How can Apple best capitalize on the needs of the business world for a safer, virus-free, worm-free system?
2. Should Apple enter the consumer electronics business like Dell and Gateway did?
3. Should Apple remain a lone wolf in operating systems or adopt a cross-platform format compatible with Windows and Intel?
4. How much emphasis should Apple place on developing the next generation of voice recognition computers?

I answered the questions to the best of my ability (which we did for our group project and got a 73) and I'm pretty scared of how it's going to be received.

I'm not used to having to answer questions at the end of the cases I do since the Harvard Business School cases don't have questions at the end.

1) as far as I see it from my own opinion and having to do case studies on apple before, apple computers are a tough sell for the business world (aside from graphic design type stuff) due to price and it's lack of compatibility with windows software (sure you can boot into windows, but that defeats the purpose of getting a mac in the first place)

2) consumer electronics business - does that encompass mp3 players? or stuff like printers or what?

3) they sort of already are compatible with windows since you can boot into windows (correct me if im wrong). also, didn't they use or still use intel chips? how old is this case?

4) sounds more opinionated to me, but i don't have the case in front of me. i think they should focus on the ipod/iphone stuff more than anything else. that is their bread and butter these days and they have a huge market share in the mp3 player world and their share of the smart phone market is pretty big considering how new the iphone is.

that's quite different than what I have to do for my mba. we have to analyze each each to determine the root problems (and all the problems that are blatantly identified are always symptoms of the root problem, not the root problem its self). then we have to justify why we consider it the root problem. next step is to identify what is driving the problem (competition, technology change, etc.). then the third step is to propose solutions, justify them, then identify consequences (both good and bad) of implementation.
