El Scorcho wrote:Yes. Duke has a gorgeous gothic campus...that is surrounded on all sides by the trashcan that is the city of Durham. It creeps in all around, and ruins the vibe I get at Duke completely. Sure, the woods and everything are nice barrier, but Durham is like a disease.
And so the socio-economic factor plays into this as well. Mostly, the types of students that go to duke do not mesh with the surrounding environment. I have met many duke students who spend their time in Chapel Hill because there is more to do & it's more of a college town than Durham.

I am all too familiar with the stereotypes about Duke students, and I won't even say I disagree with them. I'm just not going to be the one to say them.

i think duke's campus is just too old. some of it looks good and some of it doesn't look so great.
and yeah, durham pretty much ruins it. just moved my granddad out of there cause he got mugged in his own home. that city is terrible, and has terrible leadership too. that has some to do with why it is going downhill so fast

Too old???? The West Campus (gothic style) has only been there since the early 1900's. They acid-washed the stone on the campus to make it "LOOK" old.

NC State has been there since 1887, Wake has been in Winston-Salem since 1946, but it's beginnings can be traced to 1834, & UNC has been there since 1789.

I have no idea what they are judging by, but any list that doesn't have Furman in the top 20 is bogus.

And I would take Elon's campus over Duke and UNC. Maybe even over Wake.

This thread has somehow turned into a fixation on Duke, which was not listed in the top-20, by the way.

Some have mentioned surrounding area as a knock against a school. If we're going to make surrounding area a part of the criteria, then I'd have to say that the University of Washington in Seattle would have to win hands down, due to the nice metro area along with scenic beauty of the snow-cap mountains and pacific ocean.

Well, then get over it.

My list is way more realistic than the published one

Here's my top-ten, without Duke.

1. Boston College
2. Cornell
3. Stanford
4. Colgate
5. Swarthmore
6. Washington
7. Virginia
8. Princeton
9. Wake Forrest
10. McGill

The Boston College pick is interesting, considering the knock they got on joining the ACC since Boston is a pro town. I have quite a few friends from Boston & they don't really care about BC. But, they'll talk about the Celtics, Bruins, Red Sox, & Pats anytime. It's a shame such a nice campus & environment is somewhat wasted up there.

20 years ago, LU would have easily been a legitimate canidate for a spot in the ugliest 20.

i think i might have to go with va wesleyan college as the ugliest in VA. I would also have to consider Guilford college as one of the ugliest in NC - i haven't been to many NC schools, but Guilford is freaking ugly.

I haven't been to enough colleges to really be able to rank any, but I have been to Elon, and it is a very nice campus...I have a friend at Pepperdine and have seen some pictures, and I don't think anyone can argue with that pick...being right on top of the Pacific Ocean is a tremendous backdrop for a campus.

As for ugly, Charleston Southern has to be near the top of the list. They have alot of greenspace, but that's the only redeeming quality...the buildings are ugly, it's right at the intersection of an interstate and another main road (so the surrounding scenery is boring), and it's not even in one of the nicer areas of the Charleston area.

i think salve regina should be guaranteed in any top 10 list of most beautiful college campuses. i've never seen so much beauty on one single campus. if i wanted to, i could live there for a whole year and still not have enough time to take enough pictures to encapsulate the true beauty of that school. it's simply remarkable. i used to think LC had a pretty campus. Salve Regina makes LC look like a garbage dump. go take the virtual tour on their website, simply unbelievable.

There is a simlar thread on AGS, with a contribution from yours truly (of course I was going to give my school a shameless plug)

http://www.anygivensaturday.com/forum/s ... est+campus

As for my own list, I've seen about 40 campuses (youngest of four kids) and here is my top 10, with a bit of a sports slant in some cases

1. Princeton- head and shoulders above the rest
2. Duke - gotta love the chapel
3. UF- Classic arch combined w/ great modern sports facilities
4. USC - it doesn't really feel like you're in LA
5. Wake Forest- Reminds me very much of my Alma Mater
6. Alabama- a great college sports town, friendly atmosphere
7. UCLA- westwood has its charm
8. UVA- classic architecture
9. UNC- the epitome of a college town
10. Samford= obviously i'm a little biased, but the georgian-conial redbrick style is very visually appealing, and the divinity chapel was decorated by an amazing artist.

Most of what you see in all the slides is the campus or the adjacent private dorms, apt. houses and frat houses serving mostly students. Except for that big white thing with the dome. :D
