Yeah, I'd be all for that. It was a pretty good concert and I don't even really like them that much.

I've heard that they are one of those bands that even if you don't like them, they're a great show.

They where really good 3 years ago....I just don't know if we could pony up for them espically since we spend so much on CFAW....Also I would love to see Hawk Nelson here during the school year...They just played at City Stadium a few weeks ago....And they always play during Winterfest, but most students don't ever get to see them...

Off-campus concerts is always an option that's never followed up on. Starflyer 59 had a small show back in the late 90's inside some house (I can't even remember where, I think somewhere downtown), and even though I thought the floor would cave in, it was a good show. People just have to get ahold of the bands' management, work something out, and market, market, market. Being with the biggest Christion radio station in the area, it shouldn't be all that impossible to pull off.

El Scorcho wrote:I wish you would go on about it more. I have strong musical opinions as well and I'd love to hear yours. I'd also like to see Student Life collaborating with 90.9 on musical guests since, you know, you guys are the student radio station. Just seems logical to me.

Who would you like to see here? Come on. Throw us a bone.
Well I promised you that I would post a longer response to this today and that is what this is going to be.

First off I know the reason why Student Life recycles the bands. Its simple really. they develop a good relationship with the bands and their management and it becomes much easier to book those bands in the future. Building good relationships is a very good thing and could be very beneficial, but you must always be looking for new acts by using these relationships. Student Life does a pretty good job overall with the limited resources that they have, but of course things could be better.

I don't know how much I can get into things between 90.9 and Student Life, but in my opinion the relationship between the 2 is not what it should be. We have to seek them out just to promote one of those shows they are doing on campus and that process right there is like pulling teeth. It has gotten frustrating at times because we really want some of these smaller events that they do to do well. That is something we are hoping to change in the coming year. We almost get the feeling that these concerts are their little baby and they don't want to give it up to any other students, and that is the kind of attitude that needs to change so that the concert series can be much stronger.

One of the ideas we have had at the station is halfway through the semester put a survey up on the liberty website asking students what Christian artists they would like to see on campus. that way they can start working on seeing how possible it would be to book some of these artist. Bands like Mercy Me sell tickets to the older crowd, but how many college students enjoy Mercy Me?? Not a whole lot. CFAW is for recruiting college students, not their parents. But that is a whole other issue I suppose.

I am not against bringing bands back, but there should at least be a 2 year break between the times they are brought back. The only artist I can think would have an exception would be Toby Mac, simply because he has a Liberty degree. I am not a fan, but that would be the exception to the rule I would say.

Finally.......

As for a list of bands that are on the rotation at 90.9 that could do well would be these (some of these would be considered being outside the box a little, but here is a list)

Some Bigger artists:

Switchfoot (The were here a few years ago for the Block Party, but most of the students that were here for that are gone now, so its about time they come back)

Anberlin (they have taken off the last year and despite what SJ says I have seen them 12 times since they are from Orlando and out of those 12 times they have put on 1 bad performance---they are another band that was here a couple years ago, but its time to bring them back again)

Skillet ( Not sure why they haven't been here since I've been here, but they would fit in perfectly)

Relient K (Their last 3 cd's have sold over 500,000 copies with their newest cd quickly catching that, I know they have been here for winterfest a couple of times, but that doesn't count)

Jars of Clay (they recently came out with a new cd, and though have an older demographic...most kids rasied in the church listened to Jars of Clay at some point, so they would be a pretty good draw)

and this last band would be stepping way out of the box, simply because they are harder and it would be hard to convince certain people to allow them to play on campus, this band sold over 500,000 of their last cd and their newest cd has sold almost 300,000

Underoath (one of the biggest christian bands out there, but because of their style places like Liberty shy away from them. So this is probably the most unlikely of the bands to play. if we can play them on the Light why can't they play here?)

and finally a band that was already talked about, but they are very outspoken about their Christianity in many interviews they have had and that is The Fray

Some mid-level bands

Disciple (have been around for a while, but they have had 3 Christian Rock #1 singles the past year)

Flyleaf (has had some crossover success, but are outspoken about their Christianity...and the girl is kind of cute..so there you go SJ (jk)

The Rocket Summer (Just signed to Island Records, kind of a poppy band, but the girls would love him...and actually a guilty pleasure of mine....he is from North Carolina too, so maybe that adds some cred or something)

Kids In The Way (Have been around for a while, I think they would fit well playing here on campus)

Day of Fire (has done very well lately....I think they even had a song that was featured on a WWE pay-per-view...not that that even matters...are very much outspoken Christians...local band Point of Honor opened for them in NC not so long ago)

Some others that come to mind:

Falling Up

Bring Mutemath back because they put on an amazing show

Copeland

Kutless (very CCM)

The Classic Crime

Nevertheless

Leeland (worship like)

Sullivan

Fireflight

So there is a very long reply and a very long list of bands...I could actually go on.

Now as far as rap goes, as the music director with limited knowledge with Christian rap I turn to PDog for help on that and I know he has a lot of connections with different rappers. I am all for bringing in more rap artists to campus. Despite TGTGTGTG stance that this is a rock school there are a ton of people that want quality rap shows on campus and though I don't like the stuff, I am all for it.

So there you go....this was more for Scorcho, but I hope the rest of you guys got through it, and I hope I didn't make too many typing errors...

later kids

EDIT

As far as the station itself bringing in artists to the area, that is something I hope to work on throughout the semester and maybe even have some kind of small concert series in the spring, but it would probably have to be off campus, but I have some ideas that I will throw around once school starts in hopes of setting some stuff up

Don't get me wrong, it's on my iPod, but on 90.9?

Daughtry is a Christian...I got his single through the servicing that we have and scratched my head, and read his bio and he is very much a Christian, and he is actually being distributed to Christian bookstores and currently in the top 20 on the Christian charts...

LUconn wrote:I remember when they used to play Evanescance when they got big a few years ago. "I heard they used to be in a Youth group at one time!"
Evanesence was a Christian group, they then got signed to Wind Up Records and continued to be played on Christian radio stations...more stations picked them up because of their mainstream success in hopes of drawing more listeners...before signing with Wind Up they were on a small indie Christian label....then they got some success, had an intervew in Rolling Stone and the guitarist said, "I don't know why the F*** we're being played on Christian radio stations we aren't a Christian band" The thing is Wind Up was distributing their album to Christian bookstores because they were in that market before....Wind Up quickly pulled them from Christian bookstores and send out a mass letter apologizing....

90.9 is always getting itself in a fix because they play bands that were at one time on a "Christian" label like tooth-and-nail, but are not a Christian band. Why does this matter, especially when the lyrics are clean, you may be asking. Well, 90.9's plug is that they play artists that glorify God, and that hasn't been the case all the time. Bands like Evanesence, Chevelle, Dashboard Confessional, Embrace (who is nowhere near a Christian band), etc tend to confuse the landscape. I don't have a problem with them playing these artists, because I really like some of the (especially Chevelle and Embrace), but it's hard to walk that line that closely without stepping over it. And I've heard that dj's in the past have had conflicting interests with the bands they add to the playlist. So a band like Underoath would be very tricky, because although they may be Christians and all that, down the road things may change with what they're saying, ala Chevelle.

Any band that changes their stance is taken off...much like Evenesence and Chevelle...but as the music director I make sure to look into any artists that may be "questionable" by some...that way if there are any questions from DJ's or listeners I am able to e-mail or talk to them a response to their concerns.

any questions about music we play get forwarded to me and I try to answer them the best I can, most time including links of articles people can read about the artist to give them a better understanding of what they are about...there are a lot of urban legends out there about different bands that just aren't true if you just look into it more...

Only saw part of a performance one time so that's what I was going off of. I'll take your word.
Relient K (Their last 3 cd's have sold over 500,000 copies with their newest cd quickly catching that, I know they have been here for winterfest a couple of times, but that doesn't count)
The latest cd sucked but they put on a really good show that's fun for most people.
Underoath (one of the biggest christian bands out there, but because of their style places like Liberty shy away from them. So this is probably the most unlikely of the bands to play. if we can play them on the Light why can't they play here?)
We need them to play here. We really do. They were the top band on the Warped Tour last year. EVERYONE wanted to see them. If you asked for the best "buzz" band from the Warped Tour, Underoath was on there. The Almost (side project of one of them) is becoming very popular as well.
Flyleaf (has had some crossover success, but are outspoken about their Christianity...and the girl is kind of cute..so there you go SJ (jk)
Saw the video on Fuse the other day and thought they were actually pretty good. The lyrics sounded very Christian so I looked em up and didn't read anything about them being a Christian band but it was so obvious from looking through some songs.
Copeland
I love em, but you'd have to pair them with someone else, or else have it as a small show. I love their music but you have to admit, they don't play a style of music that would be a fun, energetic concert.
The Classic Crime
Good band.
Nevertheless
Back in high school we had a band called Nevertheless. It had two or three of the guys in Monday in London. They had to change their name because of this band.
Sullivan
Never liked them, even though they're from Greensboro and I almost started a band with their original drummer. Just couldn't get past the guy's voice.
So a band like Underoath would be very tricky, because although they may be Christians and all that, down the road things may change with what they're saying, ala Chevelle.
You don't have to worry about this with Underoath. They're leading Bible studies on the Warped Tour at night for any of the bands and anyone that wants to come. They've even had Fat Mike from NOFX come to them asking questions and things like that. They really take their Christianity seriously.

One band no one has mentioned that I would absolutely love to see would be MxPx.

Postman, is The Fold Christian? I haven't looked into them enough to know, but I know they're on T&N and you saw em last month.

Sorry for the long post. I love music and have been out in the field working all day.

MxPx would be very good...they are one of the bands I had in mind when I said there are a lot of rumors out there about them that people believe and when people have their mind made up about something its hard to change it, even though I can find plenty of proof that says they are good solid Christian guys that may have screwed up a couple of times....but who doesn't??

Anyways, I would bank on MxPx ever getting on campus...I would love it though

As for The Fold being Christian from everything I have read about them they are pretty solid...just a bunch of Christians playing music...which is really how most of the the bands on Tooth and Nail are...The first time I saw the fold they were terrible...but when I saw them in May they were very good...a band I wouldn't mind coming here and opening for somebody or maybe putting on a smaller show at David's Place or something

The Fold/Copeland would be a good show. Both bands that would excel in a smaller setting.

Being on the road as much as MxPx has been over the past 15 years, it's easy to see how they'd screw up. Look how many kids at LU screw up.

Heck, even church ladies Sandi Patti and Amy Grant strayed so I guess their old school stuff would be out out, too.

Of course, there are other reasons why it wouldn't be played these days on a college radio station...namely style. But, nevertheless, the point being that a song shouldn't be automatically eliminated that has artistic merit with a clean and positive message simply because it was written when an artist may have been more overtly walking in their faith simply because they've moved since--just don't play the new stuff that have contradictory lyrical content to what LU's standards are.

(This is one of the strengths I see about those KLOVE stations that are popping up in larger markets around the country...when I cruise by the station on the dial, I hear the tagline, something like, "Positive Hit Radio.")

Food for Thought: If all of LU were to adopt the stance that nothing could be read or listened to from LU sanctioned entities, regardless of it's stand alone artistic merit, that was written by someone who embodied lifestyle elements and choices that were counter to LU's standards, then a lot of English majors would head out into the professional world with a gaping hole in their sphere of reference...it would lead to the elimination of all of the instruction of Poe's works, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Earnest (which I believe the LU Theater department has performed) and the rest of Oscar Wilde's collection, also Walt Whitman, etc. etc. etc. 8)

A few bands I'd like to see more often:

Mae, would appeal to a wide group of people
Delirious, amazing show, always brings in a big crowd
The Myriad, high-quality stuff, not nearly enough recognition
