No. The HD resolution is simply a measurement of the resolution of the signal or display, just like your computer's display. It does not vary between the type of display (LCD, Plasma, SED). The resolutions are as follows:

Standard TV = 720x480
720p = 1280 × 720 (progressive-scan)
1080i = 1920 × 1080 (interlaced)
1080p = 1920 × 1080 (progressive-scan)

Currently, Fox, My Network TV (also owned by Fox), ABC, and ESPN (ABC and ESPN are both owned by Disney) currently broadcast 720p content. NBC, Universal HD (both owned by General Electric), CBS, The CW, HBO, Showtime, Starz!, INHD, HDNet ,TNT, and Discovery HD Theater currently broadcast 1080i content.

The only place you'll find 1080p content, for now, is on the Xbox360, HD-DVD and Blu-ray.

yeah, that's what I was talking about. I've got a 1080i and it shows sports just as highly defined as 720p no matter what those experts at fox try to tell you. I believe 1080p can display both 1080i and 720p, no? Either way, it seems logical that everything would move to 1080p. With the innovation of prgressive scan television, why would you stop at an interlaced standard? Also, I would like to mention that Jessica Simpson looks like a man in that commercial and for someone originally from the south, or at least a southern area, she really has the worst fake accent I've ever herad. Also she says 1080i, not p.

if the different companies broadcast in different resolution, is that why you get different looking bars when switching channels or watching commercials?

No spare parts, but the devil is in the details:

Format: 1080i, 720p, 720i, 480p, 480i

Maximum Panel Resolution: 1366 x 768

I just went over what 1080i resolution was above, and 1366x768 ain't it. The trick here is that it's a 720p TV that's doing down-rezzing to make a 1080i signal fit into a lower resolution. There's nothing wrong with that, if it's acceptable to you, and $899 is about right for a 37" 720p LCD HDTV display these days. I'm just guessing you can find a true 1080i LCD for not much more.

so basically its a lower resolution, despite what they say- and cheap guys like me will put up with it to save a few (hundred) bucks.

I spent an hour at Circuit City Sunday and there were NO 42" 1080p sets there UNDER $1500.

1080p is going to cost you a lot. It's basically top top of the line. Did you mean 1080i? 42" HD DLPs were supposed to dip under $1000 this Christmas season. I wasn't paying attention to see if that happened. I haven't been in the market for a TV for a while but I still try to keep up.

As it is now, the 18 yr old/ 25"/ 130 lb Zenith we're using requires one person to sit underneath it, plugging it in and out rapidly for the first 5 minutes (until it "warms up" ) while the rest of us sit there screaming "you got it- nooooo", "OK!- nooooo" "GOOOD! noooooo"

I picked up the 42" Panasonic Plasma for $950 but that was because I got sears to match the price of Best Buy...you know the thing BB does, they get 3 TV's in at that price to create a line day after Thanksgiving....well i wasnt going to wait so I asked Sears to match it, they did. Although they stopped shortly after b/c a few people did it and they were losing money on the deal. At least i got mine...18 months no interest baby!

Not true. All of this HD madness is why I only bought a 27" CRT standard-def TV the last time around. I was waiting for standards to be established, and to find out where the high-end would be. I doubt I'll replace my television until the next time I move. And then, I'm going the projector route. No displays for me, thanks.

Only problem with that is Bulb life......a replacement bulb could cost you 1/4 of what you paid for the whole projector. Its hit and miss from the research i have done whether its worth it or not.

The bulbs are usually rated and warrantied for a certain period. If you buy smart, it's not a problem. You can even build an HD projector for not too much money that has cheap replacement bulbs.

Well played!! I've done that before and even went one step further and went BACK to best buy with the quote to match! Of course for apurchase of this amount I am waiting for the 36 month interest free!!
But the more I have thought about it the more I am going to wait. The price will keep coming down, the 'advancements' will "peak" and the amount of programming will go up

Aaaaand Apple certainly does overshadow everything announced at CES. First, they announced Apple TV. Which is an amazing little HD device that brings all of the content from your Mac to your TV. It's really nice. However, that was not the big news. Apple, announced their entry into the mobile phone market, the iPhone.

6. Apple's iPhone - The thinnest phone in the world today, with a revolutionary touch-screen interface, running Mac OS X. Apple received over 250 patents in the making of this phone. It comes in two flavors, one with 4GB of storage and one with 8GB of storage. It's a GSM phone, Cingular exclusive. I could not explain the touch-screen interface if I tried, but it does indeed look as revolutionary as the mouse was for the computer. It's an accurate touch-screen phone that needs no stylus. Also works as an iPod. Tilt it sideways and video goes wide-screen. Has an IMAP email client, full web browser (not a stupid phone browser), widgets and lots of other Mac OS X-like features. From what I've seen, it's really simple to use. Apple prides themselves on easy to use interfaces. It seems very intuitive when you see it in action.

Cisco sues Apple over `iPhone` name

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, United States (UPI) -- Cisco Systems has sued Apple, Inc., in U.S. District Court over use of 'iPhone' on Apple`s newly announced cell phone, alleging trademark violation.

Cisco, a San Jose, Calif., networking giant, charged in a federal court suit that it has owned the name since 2000. The suit, which Apple called 'silly,' seeks an injunction that would prevent Apple from using the word.

Steve Jobs, the Apple chief executive officer, unveiled the long-awaited Apple iPhone this week at the MacWorld trade show in San Francisco and said the company plans to begin selling it in the United States in June.

Cisco claimed Apple approached it several times over the past few years about a licensing arrangement to use the name but the issue had not been resolved, Digital Media reported.

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said several other companies had used the name iPhone but Apple was the first to use it for a cell phone.

Eh. I think it's just a tactic to pressure on Apple. They'll settle out of court as soon as Apple gives Cisco what they want. They're just playing tough with each other. It's quite obvious if you check out the background that Cisco has a slam-dunk case. No big deal. Just big business as usual.

until '09. Why apple agreed to that deal I'll never know. How does exclusivity with 1 carrier benefit them? I guess it keeps their buggy first generation stuff to a minimum amount of people.

The reason they went with Cingular is two-fold. First and foremost Cingular (soon to be AT&T wireless again) is the largest wireless provider in the country. It's a good place to start.

The second reason, however, is much more practical. Cingular is a GSM-based carrier. In the non-U.S. world, the vast majority of phones are GSM. So if Apple also wanted to sell the phone in Europe it only made sense to make a GSM-based model first. Unfortunately for Sprint and Verizon, they picked proprietary non-standard technologies that will eventually be phased out and cost them a lot of money. (PCS and CDMA, respectively) It'll cost them the big bucks in the coming 3G upgrades, but the playing field should level by the time we hit 4G (when everyone will likely be using WiMax). Having said that, if Apple has success with the iPhone, I'm sure PCS and CDMA models will pop up eventually, or their next phone will support more than one carrier.

Oh, and by the way, GSM coverage in Lynchburg is terrible if you ever leave city limits, which is quite unfortunate.
