I know Bob's vocals are pretty bad at this point and his concerts are pretty much hit and miss these days, but I've always wanted to see him. The fact that Wilco and My Morning Jacket are also on the bill means we'll at least see 2 out of 3 put on a good show.
That would be cool. Ive thought about going to one of the Rolling Stones gigs this tour, but the reviews have been awful
We did pass on Bret Michael's last night but I would have liked to have gone. I figured if we support people like that, bigger and bigger names will show up here culminating in Metallica opening the new Lynchburg Civic Center! :pray

I've seen the Stones twice (2001 and 2005) and they were great both times. I've read several positive reviews of their LA show a couple nights ago, so I'd definitely check them out again I they came down this way.

SMOOTH will be both disappointed, he had his outfit all picked out, and hopeful, he has his outfit all picked out :)

This Friday is ZZ Top in the pulsating metropolis of Crewe VA and next Friday will be our favorite Elvis/Johnny Cash 50's performer.

Last night was Foreigner, but it looks like I left out ZZ Top from last month.

ZZ Top - outdoor venue in beautiful Crewe Virginia. These guys are ageless, simply because they looked old in the 80's and still do. Which is a good thing because their stage show doesn't suffer! These guys can still bring it. This is one of those bands that is so much better live then on their albums its tough to describe. There are so many subtle nuances in their guitar riffs live that it adds a whole new dimension to their catalogue. They don't do anything flashy, except their guitars, but just bring the music, and the music was good. Even their pop hits, LEGS and SHARP DREESSED MAN, had a blues sound that was pretty good.
My wife was pleasantly surprised and liked it more then she thought
We both wanted to know which one was Uncle Si
They did NOT play TV DINNERS much to my chagrin, but the drunk guy outside the seating area was TICKED and kept asking for his money back!
The 65+ year old lady next to my wife must have real bad Glucoma because she fired up 8 joints during the show!

FOREIGNER- interesting show. This is where my wife and I have clear differences. This was one of her favorite shows, and out side of the big shows like U2 and The Police, her favorite. They played every just about every hit, except That Was Yesterday which is one of my favorites. She could sing along to most of them even though she didn't know the words! The crowd interaction was off the charts good with lead singer Kelly Hansen running into the crowd and up on the GA Lawn seating area high giving everyone. For me, having Jeff Pilson, a founding member of DOKKEN on the bass PLAYING like he was still in DOKKEN, was awesome. However, I think you may be seeing trend. No original members. Mick Jones was the only one left but he wasn't playing last night, so to me it was like a cover band. A pretty freakin awesome cover band, but still. Maybe I'm just becoming a music snob. FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME was their best live song DOUBLE VISION was also pretty good. JUKE BOX HERO started out really good, then faded, then finished strong.

Next up - DOOBIE BROTHERS July 21. This concert and the one last night are at Pocohantad National Park in the Ampitheater. There are a bunch of country acts, Trace Atkins for one, that are booked there all summer. Worth the trip.

The ZZ Top guys are very visible around Houston. Billy lives near my dad and is a HUGE Rockets & Texans fan. He calls into the sports talk stations all the time with quality sports takes. I agree that Foreigner without Mick or Lou is indeed a cover act.

It is becoming a habit and a good one!

The ZZ Top guys do seem very down to earth. Lighting the cigar on stage was pretty cool!

Only a fool believes the Doobies are still good without Michael McDonald. I keep forgetting how good they were with him. At least I have it on my iPod. It keeps me running.

Many would say that McDonald actually killed the Doobie Brothers by turning them away from their rock roots and changing them into a smooth pop group.

Americanarama was a lot of fun. Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead opened and was very good, My Morning Jacket was great, Wilco was awesome and Bob sounded like I expected and it was kind of sad. I'd say about 1/5 of the crowd left during Dylan's set. I'm glad I saw him just so I can say I did, but he's the only artist on the bill that I wouldn't pay to see again.

Nice! Just got ticket to The Eagles on Nov 16. (Thank you SMOOTH) Little bit of sticker shock after paying only $40-50/ ticket but what we usually expect for 'A' level acts.
Also, Interlocken(?) in Nelson County will have Neal/Neil Young so I may have to check that out.

BUMP

So this years music tour is over. Two entirely different concerts in back to back weeks.

First at Stoner Hands of Doom I saw While Heaven Wept at Strange Matter. This was their warm up show before they headlined the Hammer of Doom Festival in Germany. A friend of mine is the lead singer and unbiasedly has a great metal voice. Very melodic and not your typical growl, scream that most new metal bands have. They are very talented and have been around for 25 years with one line up or another. If you like metal bands like Queensyche, Triumph, Faith No More then give these guys a listen. I recommend Soulsadness and To Wander the Void if you want a good sample. If you like power ballads I suggest Unplentitude.

Then last Saturday was a The Eagles. The only complaint I have is that my ears weren't ringing after the show so I'm not sure I was even at the concert! The band had all but 2 original members. 1 was sick and they fired the other. Obviously it was a treat to see them all together and they had good chemistry. I really enjoyed the songs I Can't Tell You Why, Life In The Fast Lane and the Joe Walsh Classic Life's Been Good To Me....so far. The big surprise song was the cover of the James Gang's Funk #45. A 2.5 hour show and worth the considerable coin outplayed for it since they may never tour again!

That should do it until next Spring when all the Tours fire back up. So to review, this years stops
Elton John
REO Speedwagon/STYX/Ted Nugent
ZZ Top
Foreigner
Doobie Brothers
While Heaven Wept
The Eagles

Plus throw in a couple of Wrenn's Mangum shows and it was a good tour!
