Just make sure you have at least an hour layover with US Airways (preferably at least 75 minutes) and you should be good with them. Never book a flight with US Airway with a 45-minute or less connection. Never.

Last flew mergers flew through the government approval process. The powers that be are actually behind industry consolidation, finally. Hopefully it leads to a healthier industry and friendlier sky's. Very little over lap here, US Airways and Delta traded slots in DCA and LGA a year ago in preparation for monopoly concerns. Necessary merger approvals to occur in the third quarter of 2013.

So this will make like four years in a row that there will be a brand new largest airline in the world. Delta-Northwest, United-Continental, Southwest-AirTran and now American-US Airways.

Even after the government approval, it will take quite awhile for the merger to be competed. United-Continental is still trying to complete theirs.

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but will the combined airline be with One World or Star Alliance? Please let it be the latter.

One World. They told us yesterday "everything" will be merged within 16 months. The new company has 600 Boeing & Airbus, replacement aircraft on order. MD's and 757 are on the way to the desert. I believe Republic Airlines will be replacing American Eagle and they have another 95 brand new EMBRAER 175's on order. The 175 is very nice ride.

You use United and Star from IAH mostly, correct?

Yes, IAH is my home base. I used to be 90% on Continental until the merger eliminated over half of the flights in & out of IAH. So now I fly American more these days. I would suspect a merger will mean less available flights between US Airways & American for me as well. Consolidation may keep the airlines aloft but it is bad for consumers in regard to schedules & fares. I am going to have to start leaning on Frontier, Alaska & Allegiant more moving forward.

I have status on both United & American and fly US Airways to the Southeast & DC often. Generally I place my mileage on United when flying US Airways like I'll be doing in a couple of weeks. Star Alliance has a phenomenal reward plan ... OneWorld is OK. But i do have some stray US Airway miles that I should be able to combine with my American plan (which is stashed with a bunch of Qantas flights mileage).

I just don't see the connection. The first thing that happens after these mergers is they significantly cut the routes from both sides. Sure the network will be much bigger. But that also means LYH is much further down the pecking order of the new merged airline. As long as flights are full, the service will likely not change. But that is a considerably notable qualifier.

US Airways has done well since Delta pulled out of LYH and began offering more service through Roanoke (including a full sized jet run by the main airline and not a regional affiliate). I would expect to see them stay, but it'll be years before they'll add another route.

Is it possible they would drop a flight to Charlotte and add one to say Dulles or another hub?
