Sly, I have barely even got a notice for jobs I applied for in Houston. I know the city is doing well, but I am not buying the whole idea of it being easy to find work in Houston.

Um, nobody? Forbes has a list of "Best Performing Cities" that has San Antonio #1 and Houston is #16.

I almost miss him. He came out of retirement to hate on the asians a few months ago.

Only thing about living in DC proper are the 8.5% taxes on the middle class. Sure, Maryland and Virginia are around 5%, without looking to double check that, but also the cost of living is much more. Whereas where I live, if you're smart with your money, you could make it on $15,000 a year.
I used to live where you lived, and got out of there as fast as I possibly could (would've been faster had I not bought a house). Everytime I get back to Virginia Beach from checking out my house I think "Thank God I'm back in civilization."

Its not about cost of living or money for me, but being happy with my life. I would absolutely love to be able to take the Metro to wherever w/o having to drive, live in an area where the people are educated and professional (something Roanoke is sorely lacking in), and has a decent night life. As long as I have a job to make ends meet and be able to have a little leftover to save and invest some, I'm happy.

haha. I wouldn't say I'm a redneck, but I'm definately not a city person. I guess it's all in perspective and what makes you happy. I don't mind Jersey Virginia Beach, but the city just isn't for me.

That's a year old list. Shale development has taken off to an even greater extent in the past 12 months.

jmdickens - What type of work are you chasing right now? The oil companies are hiring civil litigators like crazy to handle all of the mineral rights cases right now.

Haha, Virginia Beach is really one giant suburb, I wouldn't exactly classify it as a city. Town Center is a nice place, but there's no real downtown or central hub. It's mainly just one area of housing developments after another w/ strip malls and a resort area.

I'm glad you enjoy your area though. It is all about what makes you happy and what you want.

I'm actually looking at making the opposite move but I may end up in Norfolk instead of VA Beach, at least at first, if I get one of the positions at ODU that I've had initial contact about.
I commute from the Beach to Norfolk daily. Its about 20 minutes. As long as you're not going through one of the tunnels you should be fine. However, I only go to Military Hwy, you'll have to deal with traffic on I-64 headed towards Gate 3A. Have fun with that.

My previous job in DC was a 1:30 commute each way, minimum. Often times it took over 2 hours each way. I'd be fine with anything that's an hour or less. I've already looked at apartment complexes, in relation to the lowest income of the ODU positions, and there are 3 in Norfolk that I could afford/have great ratings (and 2 are in Ghent).

If you want commuting nightmares, try the HRBT.

Try driving on I-66 at any point of any day between DC and Gainesville. I've been in bumper to bumper traffic, at 2am on a weekday, with no construction, no accidents, and no major events in the area that would increase traffic. Most roads have downtimes, large portions of the major DC roads don't.

I enjoyed my visit to Houston in 2010 far more than I've enjoyed visiting a lot of other cities. I'd gladly return sometime.

Austin on the other hand...

I'm surrounded by Californians. You can always spot them because they buy the biggest houses in every neighborhood. After living under Cali's suffocating cost of living, they all buy palaces when they see the low prices here.

That happens when they move to Lynchburg, too. 8)

Depends what you are applying for. I work in natural gas marketing and there are a ton of jobs down there. Houston is actually the capital for the natural gas/energy sector in America. Great place to live and there is a ton of money in natural gas/energy.

Of course, it would help if commodity prices would step up. But shale development is one of the big reasons that Houston has been a boom town the past 2-3 years.

Thats right I work for a very small natural gas marketing company in Richmond and we are hurting really bad with the low prices of natural gas. If it doenst turn around not sure how much longer we can hold out. However there is soo much supply out there with the shale developments so I am not too hopeful.
