you're responsible for that thing- and if your car gets stolen or at least burglarized, you're screwed.
you have the permit- I'd recommend you keep it on you.
as for safes- I'd go with the 5 button electronic lock type. There are many issues with fingerprint scanners, and when in an immediate need to get at the weapon, I'd rather have something simple.
as for the longgun/shotguns- I'd also recommend a gun safe- for security when you're NOT home. Just NEVER a good idea to have weapons out or left in a car when you can't visually observe them.
