Let's clear one thing up...

None of these guys would be anything without the guys sitting behind the keyboards, drum pads, samplers and sequencers in the studio. Hip-hop lives and dies by producers like no other genre of music. In my mind, it's those guys who should get all of the credit. Rhymes are for nursery school.

Dr. Dre
Timbaland
The Neptunes
Rick Rubin
Kanye West (though I think he's awful as a performer/rapper)

There are plenty of others to mention here, but those guys are kings. Between the six of them they've completely dominated Top 40 radio in the last 15 years.

LOVE your list...about the only one I would add to it is Diddy...b/c he's pretty good behind the sound board.

Growing up in VA Beach, we were always big Timbaland and Neptunes fans. I was friends with Pharrell's brother in High School...there was a 2-3 year stretch in the late 90's where every song on the radio was produced by one of those two.

WOW, can't believe we got a rap thread on here..... I don't have time to read all the posts but, Eminem has two new albums coming out this year and so does 50. Seems like Dre has been in the lab with a pen and his pad. They said they had so many good tracks that they made two albums each, they all should be pretty darn good. T.I's recent album is pretty solid. I wouldn't call Pitbull hardcore or anything but I would put him in my top 10. Good call on Luda hands down in the top 5... Now we could also get into DJ's.. I got 2 that I think are at the top of the game... Clinton Sparks (Resident DJ in Vegas) www.clintonsparks.com and DJ Baby Yu (Resident DJ in the ATL) www.babyyu.com

one of my producer friends from high school has worked with Timbaland and is currently at Full Sail in Florida

No Swizz Beatz??

Do you guys know about Ryan Leslie? He's not crazy popular now, but if you go on youtube and watch him make his beats is pretty amazing.

Ok, I haven't read 3 of the 4 pages that this thread has but Here is my top 5

Rakim (Eric B and Rakim from the 80's)
Common
Jay-Z
Mos Def
CL Smooth (From Pete Rock and CL Smooth)

Also love Talib Kweli, Pete Rock, Grand Puba and Q-Tip and Phife from a Tribe Called Quest. Nas is pretty good too.

Today's rap is just not very good to me for the most part. I know I'm an :oldhag

Chuck D from Public Enemy and KRS One are really, really good too

Sounds like we have very similar tastes SCAR. I'm a big fan of Tribe, Common, and most of the others you listed. Some others I like that I haven't seen on here yet are Black Thought from the Roots, O.C., Redman, and Buckshot...none of those would be in the list of all-time greats, but I think they are all a bit underrated.

So, to keep this thread going...

and I know I could look this up somewhere, but...

What is the difference between rap and hip-hop?

Becuase I would list some of the artists I like but I am not sure which they are, and I don't want to look like more of an idiot than I already am.

The seven cities (particularly Va Beach and Portsmouth) can really turn out good talent in the rap/hip hop world. I remember seein the first stories about Missy makin it bigtime in the Virginian Pilot

I didn't think this stuff was legal in Lynchburg. Or at least I thought that rap lyrics got you stoned to death on Liberty mountain.
