there are certainly things that are clear sins and things that are preferences. sometimes the two become very much intertwined. Many many of the strongest missionary families our family knows drink wine or beer. They are in parts of the world where culturally its not a hit on your testimony to have one with a meal. now finding them bellied up to a bar, it’s a different story. That cultural shift is making its way to the US. So its not about the hypocritical nature of the lady who takes a cup of zzzzquil every night to go to sleep because its "medicine" (which is essentially a medicated shot of alcohol) yet harps on the guy sipping on a glass of scotch. because 1 from a christian perspective has traditionally been ok yet the other has not. it IS all about your testimony in the end. they are right. but its certainly not the ding on it it once was.

Here's the key to it all:

1) Why are you drinking?
2) Where are you drinking?
3) Who are you drinking around?

The answers to those questions are much more important than the actual act of drinking a beer.

I don't buy it. I love Liberty and I loved Doc. I don't drink, but I don't believe drinking is wrong. "All" of "America" was "christian" in the 1950's, right? Was "drinking" wrong?

"Drinking" was wrong for independent, fundamentalist baptist church leaders, but not even all members agreed with that. Was drinking ever "wrong" in methodist, presbyterian, Anglican churches?

Here is my (hopefully) only comment on the matter:

I don't drink alcohol. As I may have mentioned in conversation, I have only had alcohol willingly on two occasions: 1) At my grandfather's funeral when I was a child because they had an Anglican service and took the Eucharist 2) When I was visiting Holy Cross Catholic Church one sunday and they were doing that during Mass. Outside of that, I have never consumed an alcoholic beverage. I have friends who do, and have done so in front of me. I do not hold their Christian testimony in contempt because of it since it was their personal choice. I do not have alcoholic anything because that is my personal choice. Now, if they became drunk, then I would obviously take issue with that, but I do not view them as "less of a Christian", because they decide to have a glass of wine with dinner, or a beer with a meal. If Im out with them, Im ordering a Pepsi, Sprite, Lemonade...something, and they know that, but they don't call me a "weenie" or some other derogatory term because I don't drink.

My cousin and his wife are extremely straight laced as well and she posted a couple days ago that she is getting hooked on Kombucha which has a little bit of alcohol in it. Someone questioned her about it on Facebook and she said she didn't have an issue with fermented foods.

That's awesome. I'm going to ask for a Kefir and tonic next time I go to a restaurant.

46,471: Drug Overdoses Killed More Americans Than Car Crashes or Guns in 2013

(CNSNews.com) - "Drug overdose deaths are the leading cause of injury death in the United States, ahead of motor vehicle deaths and firearms (deaths)," the Drug Enforcement Agency announced on Wednesday.

In 2013, the most recent year for which data is available, 46,471 people in the United States died from drug overdoses, and more than half of those deaths were caused by prescription painkillers and heroin.

That compares with the 35,369 who died in motor vehicle crashes and 33,636 who died from firearms, as tallied by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Sadly this report confirms what we’ve known for some time: drug abuse is ending too many lives while destroying families and communities,” Acting DEA Administrator Chuck Rosenberg said as he released the 2015 National Drug Threat Assessment.

We must stop drug abuse BEFORE IT BEGINS by teaching young people at an even earlier age about its many dangers and horrors."

Kiwon - serious question here:

What is your feeling on legalized, regulated canibis use for pain? Kyle Turley was on ESPN yesterday and gave a great interview on how canibis has helped him with post-football injuries. When he was on pain meds, he had suicidal and homicidal thoughts. Now that he's using natural medication, he no longer has the side effects as he did with pharmaceutical drugs. His goal is not to get high, but rather to deal with pain.

Is that acceptable? Are you for or against that?

I know some people who i consider very good people and Christians who have had some major medical issues resulting in chronic pain. They were prescribed all the heavy pain meds that are widely used and they had the same experience and had a problem coming off of the pain meds. They now use medicinal canabis and it helps them manage their pain much better. It is not something they abuse and they dont do it to get high but to have a better quality of life. I am totally for it!!
