My wife works with very poor clientele for her job. She told me yesterday she was visiting a client in some government housing, and she saw this guy going door-to-door asking each person if they voted, who they were going to vote for, and if they needed a ride to the ballot station. The Democrats did this for probably 3-4 weeks straight, as soon as early voting started.

Republicans don't have anything to match this, nor do they even try.

That is a microcosm of America. I wonder how many people knock on the doors of the needy to help instead of just vote.

It is unacceptable plain and simple and the political rhetoric needs to be adjusted at this school. I'm sure that a good amount of African American LU students would take great offense to that comment.
How do you know it's racially motivated?
Because I read it? It's pretty cut and dry if you ask me. I even had some other LU alum friends who were disgusted by that and the LU FB page fiasco. There is no defending that comment or the LU FB post, there is apologizing and moving forward.
How is it cut and dry? Did he say anything disparaging about blacks? Or did he say the future of America looks bleak, ie black.

I mean I understand, it's always a power trip to call somebody else a racist so that we can feel okay about ourselves. As if it matters.

Because some people know the guy. He's a good person but he makes these types of jokes. This doesn't mean he's the anti-Christ. It means he's a 23/24-year-old dude make a joke on his personal Facebook page. He is in no position of leadership. His dad would make the same type of joke but wouldn't do it publicly because of his position of leadership.

Trey made a joke - the same joke that many people on this board would make with their friends. Because his name is Falwell, he's being blasted.

jbock13 wrote:Huh? No Matt said that "black" represents the darkness of evil and sin, NOT the blackness of skin pigmentation.

Remember when the liberal media went nuts after Rick Perry talked about the "black cloud hanging over Washington?" Same thing. You know what he meant. The cloud of socialism, not skin pigmentation.
Two entirely different situations. Let me break down the jokology:
Trey's statement plays on the word 'Race' which Obama lists as 'Black'. That in itself is clever and not remotely offensive to me.
Matt Helm then proceeds to take it further defining what 'Black' means in a non joking manner. The obvious insinuation being a comment against Obamas race.

Not offended by Trey's comments, but he has to learn that with a big name comes a big responsibility. For Matt to make his comment was not an attempt at humor but a statement that, while standing on its own is no big deal, but taken in the context of the posting thread is way off base.

"It looks like the Presidential race will remain black."

The presidental race, 92 percent black voted for Obama. They did not break for anyone else just like they voted in 2008. Way I took it.

Was the comment racial? Yes.
Was the comment racist? Maybe, but probably not.
Was the comment stupid and indicative of the complete and utter lack of decency, common sense, and grace that seems to pervade much of Liberty these days? Absolutely.

Its not racist but it is just kind of low class humor.

Also I am not shocked you weren't offended by it beej you love all things Falwell....but if we dare say Liberty is doing something wrong you are quick to take offense to that. Its like clock work with you

It is cut and dry because the fact of the matter is, whether or not he meant it to be racist, it is and there is no excusing it. I don't know Trey nor do I pretend to, but the fact of the matter is it's a stupid comment and it should not have been made. Apologize for it and move on.

Why should he apologize if he didn't mean it in a racial tone? And even if he did, why should he apologize? We 're all free to have our own opinions.

But I don't see what's wrong with it. After all the President is not even mostly black, he's a Halfrican-American.

In other news, the "NSA Did 911" Party got 868 votes

That would be Liberty, or at least a Falwell, admitting a mistake and correcting it. I'll believe that when I see it.

I went to LU (and got a good education) because I respect the Christian heritage and wanted that kind of education. The thing is, it isn't necessary to push partisan( of any kind) politics to provide a quality Christian education. I want the best for this school and I feel that best would be to stop demonizing any political view that isn't conservative. It isn't right to do that and I will always stand for that. I know who I've 'aligned' with, I agreed with a comment that is the sad truth. Partisanship is at an all time high IMO at LU and something has to change and with the growth in LUO, it will, just a matter of time.

Does anybody know what racism is?

Race has 2 meanings.
He used the word contrary to what you would think in the context of an election.
Hence the humor you may or may not find in that.

Not everything has to be offensive or taken seriously. I won't stand for these ad homonym attacks

No. Because it wasn't in bad taste. The President happens to be black. It was double entendre. i.e a joke.

Besides, I think 96% of a certain group voting a certain way is racist. Should I demand an apology? Cause lets be honest, the Black Panthers don't exactly mind if you point out the future of America is "black".

Regarding the Facebook comment of a member of the founding family: some keep asking, "What's wrong with that?" Why aren't we asking, "What's good about it?" We aren't supposed to simply avoid wrong; we're supposed to do good. And the two are not synonymous.

I don't care what Trey said, personally. But someone in a position of peer leadership, very likely being groomed to one day be our third chancellor (Think about that for a second or three!) should be aware of the responsibility yielded to him by his visibility and notoriety. And given this awesome opportunity of influence, what will he do with it? In this case, trade that moment to do something good for a play on words that produces a few laughs and a few more cringes. But he's young; he's still learning.

Statements like, "We're all entitled to our own opinions" are what make me cringe. Remember this: we're only entitled to our opinions if we can defend them. Freedom of Speech gives one the right to state their opinion just as much as it gives another to refute it.
