Why does everyone make such a big deal about wisdom teeth being cut out? I've heard nothing but horror stories about the pain and everything else. I had mine cut out this morning and no pain or swelling. I FEEL GREAT!!!

Must be the drugs...seriously mine went well to, they doped me up though, I remember telling the nurse that I'm to strong for the drugs to keep me down and I tried jumping...got about 2 inches off the ground and almost fell....that was kinda fun, a day in the life of Ozzy I guess

I had the same experience, with little discomfort when I had 2 wisdom teeth removed. I think it depends on whether they are impacted and how deep, and of course the skill (or lack thereof) of the oral surgeon.

I also heard horror stories about root canals, and having had 4 done now, I had absolutely no pain during the procedures and only minimal pain after the novacain wore off in the gum area around the tooth being worked on for a day or so.

Hmm. I've been putting this off for a while.

Why do I have the feeling that mine will not go so smoothly?

I had all 4 pulled and some had to be dug out as they were growing sideways. It hurt A LOT! Threw up blood - A LOT! Had a puffy yellow face for 4 days, but recovery was fairly quick.

I had ONE wisdom tooth, and I promised myself that I wouldn't get married until I was MAN ENOUGH to get it pulled. Then at the dentist's office, I cried like a little girl. No, seriously, one is no big deal. The worst part was hearing the sound of it being ripped out by the roots.

Had all 4 pulled at once. They were all 4 impacted. The extracation was ok because they put me to sleep. However, I got dry socket in 2 and that was excruciating.

My guess is Atrain will be begging for stronger drugs before the evening is over.

All mine are gone and I used local anesthetics both times. I did fine until the drugs wore off. Ugh.

I had all 4 of mine cut out this morning (the bottom ones were coming in, the top ones hadn't even broke the surface yet).

The novacain from the surgery has worn off so only prescription pain killers now...they must be working great, b/c I'm in no pain right now PRAISE GOD. I was also knocked out while they removed them. They also sprayed some extremely cold spray on my arm where the inserted the IV for the anesthesia so not even that hurt. The most pain I've felt so far was the headache from not having any coffee in the morning.

Scorcho, go to Central Virginia Oral and Facial Surgeons in Wyndhurst when/if you get it done, and ask for Dr. McAndrews. He's a great guy and also looking at getting an MBA from Liberty as well as going to law school there.

See, now that's the kind of talk that makes me feel better about avoiding it all. Thank you.

Ditto on 4

ditto on impacted

ditto on getting IV sedation and la-la-land

and...

ditto dry sockey, aka LIVING HELL for 3 days

(not to mention I bled like a stuck pig and had to have an emergency consult under streetlights in the parking lot at 1030 on a Friday night)

(ok- that last part is mostly true- he looked at me there and then we went inside where he could see better)

Ugh, I've had to have mine removed for years but I've always put it off because they are growing in straight and have plenty of room BUT all four of them have cavaties (they are covered by a flap of skin which traps anything I eat--a lovely picture, yes?).

SO not looking forward to it.

OK I know this isnt a contest but can you say army dentist??? Talk about the wrong decision!!! The only thing I can say about it was hey at least I didnt have to pay for it! all 4 impacted and I was pulling small pieces of fragmented bone out up to a month later as they worked their way through my gums. Not to mention they had to spread my jaws so wide while I wa  s sedated that I was drinking everything through a straw for almost 3 weeks, but dont let me dissuade you Scorcho!!

I got dry socket in one of my four teeth pulled before I got braces. The dry socket was not bad but what was was the treatement for it. I remember the dentist getting a cloth and dipping in some solution, when he put that in the dry socket I almost jumped out of the chair.

I've been told that I won't be getting any wisdom teeth. I'm the next step in human evolution, supposedly. I guess it all depends on if the rest of the human race follows suit.

Less than 24 hours after I'm already eating solid food. I had pizza for breakfast. They say Day 3 (which will be tomorrow) is the worst.

Nope...just zapped it in the microwave and ate it.

When I eat leftover pizza, it's got to be cold!

seriously, cold pizza is probably better than fresh. Just like microwaved Olive Garden Alfredo is better than fresh.

What is the dreaded "dry socket"?

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out just before the start of my freshman year. It was horrible! I couldn't eat any solid food for probably 5 or 6 days. I bled like crazy, they had to remove part of my bone as the roots were wrapped around the bone. Not a good experience at all.

My brother is having his taken out as I type, hopefully his will not be that bad.

OK, that explains it. Medic you wouldn't have had those problems if you could have just laid off the cigarettes and birth control pills!!!
