Since so many of us are on campus, perhaps Scorcho can fill us in on what this means, and if any NEW content will be filtered (such as sport sites, fantasy sports, etc)?
Information Services has implemented a new web content filtering system. The new system will require users to authenticate once with their university credentials before they can begin using the web for the day. You should notice this prompt only once a day and may use the web normally after logging in.

All I know is it's screwed up right now and Mac users and people using Firefox can't get on the internet. I had to get on IE.

sounds like they are probably doing some reporting now....as authenticating against your user name will allow them to collect browsing data per username. i can only assume that they didn't have transparent authentication before because there are products that will do this without you having to put in your username and password. or they are just trying to control the level of filtering by username....who knows...

That's why I log in as guest everytime.

That, and I don't want Clean Access on my computer.

clean access is kind of one of those necessary evils unfortunately...a rogue laptop can do quite a bit of damage

Since this involves my job, I can only talk about it so much.

1. They are not trying to track everyone by username. My understanding is that you weren't supposed to have to log in with the new product, which would have made it the same as our old product. However, when it went live that turned out not to be the case. I'm not sure what they'll do about that, if anything.

2. No new content is being filtered. You may encounter things that are blocked now that weren't before. However, that's just the result of the new system needed to be tweaked and not them wanting to filter anything more. If something is blocked that you don't want to be, submit a ticket to the Helpdesk.

3. Clean Access is the epitome of a necessary evil. No one likes it, but if we don't use it we'd have chaos on the network from people who don't know how to take care of their thousand dollar toys. And for the record, Clean Access doesn't do any sort of tracking. There's no big brother aspect to it. The reason you have to use your username and password is to make sure you're supposed to have access to certain internal parts of our network. If you login as a guest that is absolutely ok. You just won't have access to certain things. If you've never had a problem logging in as a guest, then keep doing it.

4. When you implement a new system that affects every single user on campus, there will be hiccups. There's a reason these things get changed in the middle of the summer. :)

el scorcho, does it only make you put your username and password in each time you open a window? or actually just once a day? ....i've not heard of a product that does the latter unless its the new cisco product. their new asa firewall does filtering i think.

There were not any computers on capus back in the late 70s-early 80s...so no need of a web content filter. However, we did have a filter of some sort. It was called The Liberty Way.

Well, I believe they got the login situation figured out yesterday, but I'm not sure since I don't go back into work until Sunday. If they didn't, we only had it set for to prompt for authentication every 12 hours. We could set it for whatever we want. It's not a Cisco product, though.

I thought the Liberty way was a funnel not a filter? Back in our day the filters were in the cars BBro!

I am at school right now (1030 AM Sat)...did not have to do any additional log-in other than updating Clean Access. No other program asked me for the user info and Firefox is running just fine. So Scorcho is correct, they must have it fixed.

School on Saturday morning? What's up with that, Fumble? I was on the James at that time of the morning, having a 20 year old college kid outfish me.
