The Mormon Church has opened up about the historical practice of polygamy within its ranks in its early years, acknowledging that founder Joseph Smith practiced "plural marriage" and had as many as 40 wives, including one as young as 14.
The church, also known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, disavowed polygamy in 1890 under pressure from the U.S. government. The church has since declared that any member who practices polygamy will be excommunicated.
