I've been with AT&T for over 10 years and have been happy with them. I get a hefty discount at any of the major carriers but haven't been able to find a better deal.

Verizon used to have a better network in rural areas than AT&T but they've beefed up their network over the past few years and I haven't had many issues. The only place I struggle for coverage is my basement. :)

At the end of the day, everyone will pick a different carrier based on what they individually need (cost, coverage, etc.). I don't think one carrier covers every single base for everyone. Some folks like T-Mobile but their coverage is mainly based in urban areas. If you like having coverage while you drive, probably go with someone else.

But arguing which carrier is the best can be like arguing Apples vs. Oranges since mileage is going to vary depending on where you live and what you are paying for.

It's like internet service. I've lived in places where I would swear by Comcast and how great their internet services are and I've lived in places where I would curse them. LOL mileage is always going to vary

It is easy to fall away from the path. But remember son, that it is just not under the bridges where the trolls reside.
Now, off and transgress this way no more.

Alas, your disdain for Verizon ignores the fact that they are pretty overwhelmingly recognized by everyone I've talked to and articles I've read as having the best network. I know you will deny that but that confirms my suspicion that your opinion is worthless.
I apologize, I didn't realize you are also known as alabama24, otherwise known as the person who brought up the subject of potentially switching providers and asked for input. Therefore, given the fact that international coverage and more data is useless to you, your opinion henceforth is worthless to the topic at hand. Good day sir.

International coverage and more data aren't at the top of my list, but I was glad to learn about it. Having looked into it a bit more because of this thread, I am more inclined to go with a GSM provider, all other things being equal. I still don't know if we will switch. We aren't unhappy with Verizon... except our current bill. I DO want to get a new phone, but patience is a virtue. At this point, my priorities include:

1. Voice coverage at home (top of candler's mtn.)
2. Good data in the burg.
3. Good voice coverage traveling from LYH to MI (via WV, OH)
4. Good voice coverage traveling from LYH to AL (via NC,SC,GA)
5. Adequate data coverage for the same to be able to search "what's at the next rest stop" (I DON'T need to be able to stream netflix, pandora, spotify or anything like that.)
6. Cost.

Well the two main national GSMers are AT&T and T-Mobile, and T-Mobile's overall coverage is awful compared to AT&T. It's a lot like Sprint in that it works well in urban areas but not always too well elsewhere, but it is better than Sprint. AT&T works well for me in Lynchburg, not sure about all those places you are traveling to though.

But if you switch from Verizon to a GSM, you'll have to get a new phone as far as I know.

AT&T was more expensive than Verizon when I looked into them last week... Even with the discount. I have ruled them out. I am debating doing the 7 day trial phone with tmobile... But I will have to drive 2 hours away to drop it off when I am done.
