I was able to fire the Bushmaster AR-15... it was incredible. I was expecting a much larger kick than what it gave.

Thanks for the article on Gander flamehunter. I've been to Tactical Ridge and Lynchburg Arms so far. Lynchburg Arms was busy, but one of the guys was nice enough to show me 3 pieces I was considering and talk to me about each of them. He probably spent a good 20 minutes with me. I'll probably make the trip to Gander this weekend.

went to a gun show last Sunday in Richmond..first time going to a gun show..pretty impressive...
That's cool! How much did it set you back, if you don't mind me asking. I'm moving out to Virginia in July and am looking to get something myself.

I dropped 700 for it..yes it was overpriced..realistically the gun should prob cost around 4-500 however given the timing of the purchase it was a little more expensive..I prefer the AR, however I didnt see one going for less than 2k. AK's are the most durable weapon out there, and given that I most likely wont be cleaning this gun once a month, it was probably the best high powered rifle for me. I dont see the price of assault rifles dropping so I felt ok dropping the extra money..I will gladly over pay a couple hundred bucks to have the ability to fight against tyranny.

Just going to add my two cents. Gander Mountain has a great selection, but expect to pay higher prices than your other gun dealers or at a gun show. Went to the Salem gun show on Sunday and was hugely disappointed. Everything was gone! Went just before Christmas (on Saturday) and there were vendors and guns everywhere (picked up a new Glock as an early Christmas present :o )

I personally think handgun and ammo prices will drop a bit after this initial uproar, not so sure about ARs and AKs. I think it may take a while for those to get back to 'normal'.

If you want a good deal on a handgun, I recommend you check out a gun show, and three vendors in particular that I always stop by (in order of recommendation).

1. Commonwealth Arms out of Covington. Best prices usually, not always the largest selection, but at Christmas they had plenty of Glocks (Gen 3s), quite a few Sigs and several wheel guns, if you like those.

2. Dark Sun. Some people say these guys are a pain to work with, but they've always been fine when I've talked with them. Big selection, and usually pretty busy, so I expect they don't have time for a lot of questions. If you know what you want though, they sell a ton of guns.

3. Trader Jerry out of Salem. Probably the largest selection, and usually a few dollars higher, but again, they have just about everything.

Upcoming gun show dates:

Roanoke Civic Center: March 16-17 http://www.showmasters.us/ShowInformati ... fault.aspx

Salem Civic Center: April 27-28 http://cegunshows.com/ShowInfo/SalemVA/ ... fault.aspx

can't believe i haven't seen this yet.

Where are you guys getting your ammo? I have a walther Pk 380 for CC and the decent 380 ammo is nowhere to be found. I've always been leery of buying ammo in bulk online but even they are in short supply. In the past week ive been to bass pro, acadamy sports, 3 walmarts and a gun range. all are out of 9mm, 380, 40 s&w and 45 and most were out of 357 as well.

I have gotten recent ammo at dicks and at a gun show...I have seen a lot of websites but most of them are out of stock...if you are target practicing i wouldnt be leery of ammo in bulk online but for home defense or hunting i wouldnt really try to pinch pennies..just my two cents (pun intended)

I agree with bball... Gun show in Salem had a vendor selling bulk ammo. It wasn't a great deal, so I didn't bite, but obviously, folks on Saturday had, because there were a bunch of boxes gone.

The Pro Choice Sports store over in Forest seems to be getting ammo trickling in from time to time, too. I was at Gander Mtn. in Roanoke on Sunday and they had any kind of personal defense ammo you want, but their FMJ was almost all gone (at least for .380 and 9mm). I've about decided that I need to quit consolidating my calibers and replace my long gone .45. I put all of my eggs in one basket to save on having to buy different ammo, but I bet on the wrong pony (9mm).

I also agree with bball about extra high quality target ammo, but personal defense/carry ammo don't be cheap. How much is your life or the life of a loved one worth? (That's like going cheap on a motorcycle helmet :) )

I wonder if they'll have any 9mm FMJ... All I've been able to find at this point is hollow tips and at $26 for 25ct., I'm not shooting that...

Yes they will. I went back in January and there was plenty of ammo there. It might be a little pricier but its better than nothing. I will be there for this next one as well.
