What are the current rates for consolidation loans? I'm helping a friend out who is going through these same things, looking at about 20 years of payments right now.

They're in the 6's right now.

Thats what her stafford loans are at. Doesn't seem like consolidating would be a good plan. At that high of a rate, I'd be making extra payments to speed it up bc it'd be tough to invest it and earn that return with low risk.

The good thing if you consolidate is that you can go on an Income Contingent Plan of repayment. Through that, it determines your payment based on how much you make and then brings your payment down. While you pay less, my understanding is that one payment at the lower rate accounts for the full normal payment.
