I think I have been very open about my disdain for the Apple culture and the closed off sector of society that it has developed. But I have to give Steve jobs credit for a terrific ability to cast a vision in order to change the paradigm of the expected. that was in evidence by his closing remarks at the iPad 2 announcement:
Steve Jobs wrote:I've said this before, but thought it was worth repeating: It's in Apple's DNA that technology alone is not enough. That it's technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the result that makes our hearts sing.

And nowhere is that more true than in these post-PC devices.

And a lot of folks in this tablet market are rushing in and they're looking at this as the next PC. The hardware and the software are done by different companies. And they're talking about speeds and feeds just like they did with PCs.

And our experience and every bone in our body says that that is not the right approach to this. That these are post-PC devices that need to be even easier to use than a PC. That need to be even more intuitive than a PC. And where the software and the hardware and the applications need to intertwine in an even more seamless way than they do on a PC.

And we think we're on the right track with this. We think we have the right architecture not just in silicon, but in the organization to build these kinds of products.

And so I think we stand a pretty good chance of being pretty competitive in this market. And I hope that what you've seen today gives you a good feel for that.
Overly idealistic & arrogant? Absolutely. But I respect his ability to see outside the boundaries established by the world around him. It was similar vision that built our university. There are lessons to be learned from this diatribe about how we perceive the world around us.

Come on, Scorcho. I'm throwing your man a bone.

For the record, Lookout worked. I can't imagine having an Android phone without it.

Yeah, but with qualifiers. I'm just saying. There are many types of "closed" and Apple's closed does come with advantages.

Also, is it really arrogant and overly idealistic when you're in the position he's in? I don't really think it is. John Sculley and the Apple board accused Jobs of the same things in 1987 and then fired him.

Yeah.

So you are suggested that just because he is in the catbird seat at the moment that he can't be arrogant or overly idealistic? I'm not sure I buy that train of logic.

For the record, my qualifiers were scant in proportion to my praise in the original post. Come on, man. Let me throw Jobs some love this one time. He can return to being maniacal from my perspective the other 364 days of the year.

At the moment? The man has been right on 95-ish percent of the calls he's made since he came back to the company.

Of course anyone can be either of those things. What I'm asking is, if he's right, is it arrogant? If arrogance is an overabundance of self-importance, I'm not sure that he can be. Apple kind of is that important to the industry, and really to this country at this point. They're the innovators and Jobs knows it. I don't think it's arrogance at all. And his idealism about their products is what makes them what they are. Compromise leads to the crap the rest of the market produces.

Pfffft.

He's absolutely the worst as far as being concerned for the customer just within the last few weeks we saw a perfect example...with the latest iPhone 4 being released on VZ a year after ATT....they are already talking about the IP5 and I give it 6 months.....aka everyone pays full price that already made the switch...not to mention the new in app subscription policies

hey, at the end of the day if I was him I'd do the same thing....I have a product that allows me to take advantage of the situation...good for him!
