Good idea. Extending the rights of American citizens to non-citizens. I wonder if any staffers have told him that mindless pandering campaign promises were simply that.

Did anybody else try to talk themselves after the election into thinking "maybe he won't be as bad as we all think". I had myself convinced that he was playing to his base for the most part.

US President-elect Barack Obama intends to push a comprehensive programme of social and economic reform beyond an immediate emergency stimulus package, Rahm Emanuel, the next White House chief of staff, indicated on Sunday.

Mr Emanuel brushed aside concerns that an Obama administration would risk taking on too much when it takes office in January. He said Mr Obama saw the financial meltdown as an historic opportunity to deliver the large-scale investments that Democrats had promised for years.
So now I'm pretty sure that he's far worse than we all thought. I'd say by the middle of February we should be just about as pathetic as Europe.

Yes LUConn, I kept telling myself that...

Anyone want to move to Australia or New Zeland? I'm seriously considering it after May.

I say, Obama's position on Gitmo detainees is stunningly similar to the position harbored by his former Republican challenger.

Bringing back this thread (I've been doing this a lot), I just wanted to show the awful treatment of these prisoners. What the United States is doing is simply reprehensible.

i didn't have much of a problem of closing gitmo when i believed they'd move the prison to pakistan or some other middle eastern country....but apparently they had NO plan whatsoever and luckily congress, as stupid as they are was like, "uhh no"

Yeah, so now we give them Miranda rights and move some to places like Bermuda without Britain's permission and force tiny unknown island nations to take on prisoners. Smooth sailing from here.

We have to send them to tiny islands because apparently, as Americans, we do not have the capability or balls to keep them imprisoned in prisons on US soil with the likes of El Sayyid Nosair, James Ujaama, and Mohamed Rashed Daoud Al-Owhali (three of many terrorists already imprisoned on US soil)

At worst should just send them to the streets of St. Louis or Baltimore. That way we are punishing them and we avoid breaking with the Geneva convention.
LA Times wrote:"I make up stories," [Khalid] Mohammed said, describing in broken English an interrogation probably administered by the CIA concerning the whereabouts of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. "Where is he? I don't know. Then, he torture me," Mohammed said of his interrogator. "Then I said, 'Yes, he is in this area.'
But then we couldn't get all this great info with torture....

A little selective, don't you think? Let's take a story from the LA Times that interviews a detainee who's in prison as a terrorist and we'll take his word for it. The US military and CIA are a bunch of idiots, right?

This got little to NO media attention....but tell my why this wouldn't work...ill stick them in frigid montana over Bermuda....

Economic development officials in Hardin are looking at the soon-to-close detention facility in Guantanamo Bay as a possible fix for the jail sitting empty in Hardin.

President Barack Obama signed an executive order Jan. 22 to close the Guantanamo detention facilities in Cuba where hundreds of enemy combatants have been held since 2002. The closure is to occur in a year, during which time remaining detainees must be returned to their home countries or detained elsewhere.

Meanwhile, a 460-bed detention facility sits empty in Hardin. Built by Two Rivers Authority, the city’s economic development arm, the facility was meant to bring economic development to Hardin by creating more than 100 high-paying jobs.

While leaders continue to look for contracts to open the jail, which was completed in 2007, people in Hardin have approached Two Rivers executive director Greg Smith saying they have the answer: Get the contract to hold those prisoners from Guantanamo.

Smith said he started looking into the process to contract - which still isn’t clear - and has talked to other possible players, including federal agencies and staffs of the Montana congressional delegation.

It’s also not yet clear which agency would operate the facility that ends up holding the detainees.

The Hardin City Council voted Tuesday to support Two Rivers’ efforts.

You're talking about the CIA and US Military that said there were weapons of mass destruction in iraq when there wasn't? If so, then yeah, maybe.

You actually still believe this? Just do a quick search on any search engine.

1.77 metric tons of enriched uranium

1,500 gallons of chemical weapons agents

17 chemical warheads containing cyclosarin (a nerve agent five times more deadly than sarin gas)

Over 1,000 radioactive materials in powdered form meant for dispersal over populated areas

Roadside bombs loaded with mustard and "conventional" sarin gas, assembled in binary chemical projectiles for maximum potency

And to think that Iraq just sat on everything knowing we were coming just seems kind of naive.

Haha....You are kind of changing the implied definitions after the fact, aren't you? Not to mention undermining the final CIA report on WMDs in Iraq (it said there were none), which would mean they were lying in the report....AND you were trying to prove the CIA was competent and trustworthy. Even former President Bush said that the intelligence failure in Iraq was his biggest regret.

Plus, even if those are the criteria for WMDs and thus an invasion, we should invade:

Egypt, North Korea, Syria, and (gasp) Israel. We should all write Congress and tell them we need to invade those countries in order to protect the US.

Another thing...It seems odd we found all those chemical weapons and none were used against us. It probably means they knew they would be overran quickly. So this about it being naive to believe they didn't get rid of many more terrifying weapons seems remote. Also, the leaders didn't escape to exile, which would be something someone would do after they got rid of a bunch of weapons in the hopes of not having them used against them as some sort of evidence later. The weapons probably would have been used as a bargaining chip to gain access to the country taking them as exiles. I think it is naive to think there are/were WMDs or more WMDs that were silently stashed away or whisked over the Syrian border.

Funny thing, I think I vaguely recall Sadam trying to scoot off into exile, but no one would take him, instead he went into hiding. And the using the simple premise of the mere presence of weapons for invasion is ridiculous. WMD's has never been defined solely by nuclear arms. It's funny you really don't think they got rid of any weapons or evidence of it. I guess you can believe what you want, just doesn't seem very likely to me. But I guess neither of us can prove it one way or the other, yet.

Exactly. So why would he have gotten rid of other weapons? The list you gave is what has been found it Iraq, which implies we had to look around for it. It has been said that those weapons found weren't what we were looking for. I doubt they were just sitting in a yard somewhere. They at least would have tried to hide them, I don't dispute that. But clinging to a belief that they were taken to another country without getting anything in return is similar to beliefs held by people who are buying a lot of ammo and hiding in remote cabins thinking Obama is out for their guns. It's conspiracy theorist level at best.

I never said, sole definition, my post said "implied definition". If I yell fire in a theater, people think big fire, even if I only saw someone with a cigarette lighter = implied.
