Microsoft's Xbox 360 is suiting up to become an all-encompassing entertainment center. British broadcaster Sky has announced a deal between Sky and Microsoft that will bring live television programs such as sports, TV shows and movies to UK and Irish Xbox 360 consoles by fall 2009.

Sky will offer multiple subscription packages so users can customize the depth of programming they wish to view. All content will be delivered via the customer's broadband Internet connection, eliminating the need for set-top boxes and satellite dishes. Pricing details are not yet available.

Sony and Nintendo already have a similar set-up with the BBC's iPlayer, a Hulu-esque arrangement that allows the PlayStation 3 and Wii -- as well as Windows, Macs, Linux and iPhones -- to stream the past week's television programs instantly.

that's pretty cool. if the xbox over here in the US ever does that I might consider it if it had the proper sports channels and price and if the US would ever get on the ball with better broadband internet.

Wait, why would I want to turn on my TV, and then fire up my XBOX to watch TV? Is it like instead of having cable, I'd use XBOX Live?

Something that XBOX needs: HULU! I NEED TO WATCH HULU ON MY XBOX!

Google for Microsoft IPTV Xbox. They've demo'ed it several times over the last couple of years.

Their biggest issue in the states is getting the ISP's to give them QoS on their networks to make it work. The ISP's have no reason to do it because all of the ISP's here are also television providers.

Good luck, Microsoft.

the video game convention E3 starts today... This is when the publishers and manufacturers make the big announcements. It'll be interesting to see if Microsoft makes mention of this.
