Check Out Some of The Major Changes at High Point
I was chatting with a fellow Big Southie Graduate today (High Point alma mater) at work because I ran across the HP site while doing some client research and I found all of this news of development going on there. I found all of this information interesting, seems that HP has their own high powered fundraiser to rival JF's fundraising efforts: Their new President, Nido Qubein, is a former HP graduate who immigrated to the U.S. in the 70's with $50 in his pocket and went on to become quite successful, and he was intially going to return to be on the board but took the President's position when it was offered to him instead. He kicked off the first 29 days of his stated goal of increasing the brand value of the HP experience and degree--to develop HP into a nationally acclaimed top liberal arts school--by raising 20 million dollars for expansion, and increased the original goal of 60 million dollars in improvements to 100 million since they hit the 60 million dollar mark so quickly. He is also an award winning motivational speaker and has some interesting things to say concerning bridging his business background/acumen/experience with heading a university.

Here are some of the pics of their current projects. My co-worker said that for each building all the way down to the furniture he has a huge notebook that he carries with him and people can donate their money to the school for the specific items/levels of construction. She mentioned that he is very much an attention to details and planning kind of guy but very accessible to the students. Also, remember that High Point is Methodist backed and actually went bankrupt in the 30's and was reconstituted (we were exchanging rule comparisons, for example at High Point, ladies and guys can be on one anothers hall, but have to check in with security for that hall and can't be in a coed's room past a particular hour or face demerits/fines.)
But I digress...I envy the soccer/track complex as I am sure the soccer players/track athletes will also. I also like the ideas of roofs on buildings. Anyway, seems like lots of Big South Schools are on the move...One side note, I noticed that both Winthrop and High Point are rated highly among southeastern colleges and have the stamp of approval to wear on their homepage. As an alum of LU, I would like to see a concerted effort by LU to at least catch up with our southie brethren on rankings, up to at least third tier up from our current fourth tier badge would be nice, especially if LU is to "challenge Harvard in Academics" (quoted in numerous articles attributed to JF.) Now, before Tally jumps on this, and tries to pigeon hole me for complaining (which I am not) and not being grateful for the strides LU has made thus far, I am merely pointing out that our rivals in conference are on the move when it comes to upping the ante across the board (facilities, academics, athletic programs, collegiate atmosphere/experience.)
I would love to see something on LU's site like the page devoted to future expansion on High Point's site that shows artist renderings of the masterplan and buildings currently being built and future projects.
