Some of these look like they were taken out of movies. the Spanish theatre reminds me of August rush. and looking at all of them it makes me wonder if thats what it would really feel like if the city was totally deserted kind of like the movie I Am Legend with Will Smith. its sad

is it? It's not like everybody who lived there died. They just realized that Detroit was a horrible place to live so they left.

I was just up there last summer before school started. It sure did not seem to be such a desolate place to me back then. Plenty of life in the area around the stadiums...and the suburbs out towards Ann Arbor appeared to be doing just fine.

I am pretty sure you could do that with most cities through a photo essay. However, Detroit is probably one of the easiest. I expect due to the unions and political corruption it has seen its better days.

I will ALWAYS love Detroit. It is like taking a step back in time when driving through it. Unfortunately, much of it is in collapse. If you ever find yourself in Detroit wanting to sight see, take I-75 North and then go North on the Lodge (M-10). When you get to Grand Blvd, go West. You won't believe the homes you will see for around 10 miles. Detroit must have been AMAZING 50 years ago. HUGE houses, and they are amazingly still in decent shape, even though they have not been well taken care of. There were THOUSANDS of homes like this in Detroit. TONS of money back 40-50 years ago.

Detroit is a lost cause at this point. They refuse to elect mayors and board members that are willing to change the city and it's image. It often is an "us vs. them" mentality. Quite a few board members are openly racist, and I say that because of the comments they make. Monica Conyers is the worst of the bunch. Some FUNNY videos of her on youtube if you ever want to search them. Anyway, the elections are shady, and there is PLENTY of proof of cheating. The council doesn't care, and obviously neither do the vast majority of the voters in Detroit as they do nothing when clear inconsistencies arise. Basically they've let the criminals take over, and the system is probably beyond repair.

IMO, what will happen, is the state will take over Detroit in the next 10 years. It will be considered a VERY racist thing by many in Detroit, but when you cannot pay your bills and your school system is in shambles, something has to be done.

Hopefully Jen Granholm will be out of the state by then... If you put her in charge of the Sahara, it'd run out of sand.

Newt Gingrich has spent a lot of time studying Detroit and its demise, and it's amazing how far it's fallen, from the richest city in America to just about the poorest, and its population is now about half of what it was at its height.
