First and foremost, let me say something that applies to all cell carriers, regardless of where you live: Buy a good phone. I have friends complain to me all of the time about how their signal sucks with this carrier or that one, but none of them ever bothered to read a review on their phone before they bought it. The model of phone you buy can make all of the difference.
C|Net usually has great phone reviews. All I'm saying is, don't expect spectacular call quality with the $0.99 special you got when you signed your contract.
Now, Alltel operates in place of Verizon in the Lynchburg area, since the both operate on the same time of signal. I've been using them since January of 2004, and when I've had good phones, I've had no complaints. Currently I have a Motorola V710, and it's been fine. I'll likely be switching to a
UT Starcom PPC 6700 soon. This is in anticipation of Alltel rolling out EVDO coverage in the area. I'm dying for EVDO.
In addition to that, I had a Sidekick2 with T-Mobile for about a year and a half. For the first year I just had data services, and it was great as long as I had a data signal. The problem is that T-Mobile and Cingular's GSM signal (they share coverage in this area) stops at the city limits. If you're outside of town, even just a little, forget it. That last 6 months I had phone and data from T-Mobile on the Sidekick2. Never had a problem with the voice service as it roamed fairly well, just wish the GSM data signal had better coverage. Service aside, the Sidekick2 was absolutely my favorite phone ever. Were I not getting the UT Starcom, I'd have kept my T-Mobile service and tried
the new Sidekick3 that came out last week.
Lastly, I think Sprint probably has the second best coverage to Alltel in the area. Unfortunately, they don't offer a lot of great phones so you have to be kind of picky. They also tend to lose coverage if you end up out in the sticks, or at the lake for instance. Additionally, they're not rolling out their EVDO coverage here anytime soon, which sucks. They'll still sell you the fancy phones with all of the high-speed EVDO-dependant features, though. No problems there. My wife has had Sprint for three years, and we have no plans to switch her to another carrier. Besides her
Samsung A900 is hot. I get jealous of it.
