Charlton Heston, 84; actor, Oscar winner, played grand figures
The Oscar winner played Moses and Michelangelo, then later became a darling of conservatism.

Charlton Heston, the Oscar-winning actor who achieved stardom playing larger-than-life figures including Moses, Michelangelo and Andrew Jackson and went on to become an unapologetic gun advocate and darling of conservative causes, has died. He was 84.

Heston died Saturday at his Beverly Hills home, said family spokesman Bill Powers. In 2002, he had been diagnosed with symptoms similar to those of Alzheimer's disease.

Didn't he speak at a 4th of July celebration or something like that?

I remember him speaking at chapel back in the day and he came back to campus in the summer of 2001.

I saw him speak at the 4th of July event at liberty that summer. He spoke on the "religion of freedom". I donated the $10 and was supposed to get a silver bullet with his signature engraved on it. Never saw it. I guess I was too cheap. Great speaker, though. I love guns, so I really enjoyed hearing him speak even though I found his wording mentioned above to be little strange.

Also at the event was a high wire act – it was this family that goes around and walks across a high wire and preaches on the Gospel. He went across Williams stadium and almost fell off at the beginning.

LU puts on quite a 4th of July spectacle. I really enjoyed it.
